f you look inside the air box there is a ''hump'' at the outlet into the box chamber. from what i can rember it looked like it was to stop water splashing onto the filter?? it was also smaller in dia than the rest.
i cant see how cutting the ''hump'' out wouldnt help with air flow?? ive done mine and for seat of the pants testing there isnt any differance. i think its down to a certian tuner not being able to understand programing.. that the dont do mod comes from.

anyway if cutting it out affects lo down torque so much than surley fitting a snorkle would nullify that??

    cheers phil

I believe it to be the removal of the hyclone and its restrictive enclosure. I also understand that the 2004 models didn't have the hyclone - just like the petrol versions.

OK I happen to have 2 of those useless things in my Defender - put in by previous owner who thought they did something. When I manage to get some silicon hoses for the Tdi (from someone) they will come out.

As for my Disco's air box. Short of changing the whole air box out for a better design (if one exists) I can't see where you'd get any improvements, especially with a snorkel fitted.

The Disco's is to extract dust rather than to stir-up the air. I do wonder how restrictive it is as its still larger than the turbo intake, although every little bit probably helps/hinders. As for a snorkel, whilst the oval cavity would be more restrictive than a circular cavity, the original intake is oval and the cross-sectional area of both the original intake and my LR/Safari snorkel outlet (I can't measure further up the tract) are greater than that of the dust extractor.

I wonder why the dust extractor was omitted from the later models? Probably cost saving on a model being phased-out but just possibly for performance reasons.

OK thanks for explaining. Still sounds to me like a bit of false gain to improving the performance.

I have a BD ECU upgrade and Love It,
recently did the Airbox Mod and could notice the difference straight away.

Hot a huge difference just a little. It just hangs on a little better on hills.

Have not noticed any difference to drivability.

Had to put the upgraded intercooler on hold as got married,
waiting for a member to get some stock cant wait should be good.

    Cheers

FWIW i drive a 06 Nissan navara (i know its going soon) the airbox had a maze of baffles that i am sure some Japanese guy spent a lot of time designing anway 15 min later and a tube of silicon i took all the baffles out and resealed it.
outcome - instant boost from take off and high end. and a nice turbo sound while driving.

as far as engine mods with TD5's Andrew Richmond from LRA in melb moded his td5 to the **** house!!! 3 autos in less then 10 000K convinced him to de tune it so he stopped blowing zf's anyway he tells me that the zf in discos dont like more then 500nM his runs just below and has lasted a desert trip and had no probs since. he also got the box built with jag clutch packs and jag 1st gear and still had problems so what i am saying is get a good balance if you want a rocket buy a rice burner not a land rover..... my 2 cents

Had the BD chip in my '99 manual Dicso TD5 and no end of drivability probelems over the past 2 years. Rcenetly fitted the factory ECU back in for testing and drivability was improved by a country mile. BD's detuned and revised ECU remap is about to be fitted to mine and keen to see the results.
As mentioned above, outright power should not be the goal and for me after trying one power chip upgrade, I now want low down torque and drivability/predictibility throughout the rev range.

    Aye, Mick

P.S. Interested to know if a remapped "flashable" ECU might work better than a non flashable "chipped" ECU in a '99 manual TD5......anyone swapped their ECU and can shed some light?
'99 Manual TD5 D2.......heap of money spent on it and it has ended

It all depends if who is remapping it knows what they are doing. like all programmable ecu's a few wrong numbers and you are driving a dog! Good luck with it!!
