10,000 drivers caught speeding in new Sydney tunnel
New figures show that more than 10,000 motorists have been booked for speeding in Sydney's Lane Cove tunnel since its opening just six weeks ago.
The Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) says one driver was clocked at 156 kilometres an hour.
RTA spokesman Adam Berry says motorists must slow down.
"There's no excuse for speeding through the tunnel. The signs, the cameras are well sign-posted," he said.
"Everybody in Sydney knows that speed cameras are in tunnels.
"We are surprised by the high rate, and that's why we're here to issue a warning to motorists to slow down.
"We see this as a genuine road safety problem given the recent events in Melbourne."
Three people died in Melbourne's Burnley Tunnel in March after several trucks and cars were involved in a fiery crash.

To be fair though, if there are big fat signs up warning of the cameras then there are 10,000 stoopid people in Sydney. I personally don't class those ones as revenue raisers.
Depends on if they are as reliable as the ones on the Western ring road in melbourne, they got thousands and thousands of people and then came out and said the cameras were out of calibration and shut them down for nearly a year.
It might be this is happening there as well as the coppers were on telly all the time going they got this bloke and that doing this speed and it wasnt until they booked a truck trailer going 30kms faster than the cab and a 120y, stock standard doing 190kmh that was on the news getting tested at calder park and topped out at 117kmh that they decided something was wrong.
Either that or the Sydney siders that have been caught are Dumb A$$es
hmmm,
decided to give my maths a workout.
10,000 at the bottom fine rate ($77) = $770,000
= equivalent of 7,190 extra cars per day over the period. About an additional 2hrs of peak hour volume.
Estimated equivalent cash in from tolls only: $11,246,000
If however, 54% of those speeding were doing 125+, and the other 46% were doing 110+, then there'd be no need to bother collecting tolls!
Or... if they dropped the speed limit by 20kph and stopped collecting tolls, their daily takings on the camera would cover costs with 15-16,000 $77 fines!
But the RTA couldn't be bothered managing the tunnel, so all those who use it have to pay, rather than those who want to use it fast. Sort of scaled user-pays.
ok, I'm bored of maths now.![]()
