    Aluminium boxes

I've been looking to have five aluminium boxes made, for the purpose of carrying spares, food, supplies - the usual stuff - in my LR Defender 110 (Btw, I live in Oman).

Don't seem to be able to get the job done at what I'd consider a fair price, so am looking for alternatives. What about the durability/ suitability of wood, of something that appears to be formica (would be built into aluminium framework)?

** Could someone please tell me the relative cost of aluminium/ galvanised steel? (one square metre of each, for example: what's the price differential?)

Suppose one goes to a small private metal workshop in Australia and asks for an aluminium box, 85 x 30 x 27 cm (that's about 69,000 cubic centimetres) with a hinged lid, handle on each side, provision for a couple of locks ..................... how much would they ask for that job? /What would be a fair price?

including supplying the metal upwards of $200-300

IMHO you are better off getting some of the older metal ammo tins amd keeping your food in plastic inside them, They can be had cheap enough if you know where to look and most of them will tetris into a space with other types of ammo boxes, the smaller ones have handles on the lid to make em easy to get out..

I swear by .30 and .50 cal (now used for 5.56 in blister packs and 7.62 link instead of .30 cal) liners 4 .50 and 1 .30 cal liner fit nicely across the well in the back of a rover.

Anything Ali is exy as it's not cheap to buy the materials nor cheap to weld and cut unless you are specifically set up for it.

I generally use plastic boxes as they are robust cheap and if you get all the same, they stack nearly as good as ammo boxes and they are also light so your payload isnt all taken up with the boxes them selves.

If you get them somewhere like Kmart, you can generally pick up replacements in any major centre if you break 1 aswell.

I will probably make my drawers and water tanks from Ali when I get my new welder but thats because I will have to justify the welder and they will be nice and light.

Nothing at all is wrong with them other than they take up more space than you can fit in them.

I do know people who use them on their utes and they are light and strong but in a wagon (like a D1) with kids, fridge and toolbox, you really need something that will fit in a specific place and those boxes even though they are made in a mutitude of different sizes dont always fit where you want them.

Apples for apples though, you will get a crap load of those boxes for the price of a custom made ali one.

The other ones I like are the army plastic foot lockers. We use one at work as an esky. Quite big though but stack realy well and are strong.

I agree, I've got 3 of them (all mine!!). Also the same gose for Blknight.aus with the .30 and .50 cal ammo liners. If your lucky you can pick up 25mm ammo liners. There strong and stack realy well.
