    Crappy bolts...

I've just returned from a 4WD Driver Training weekend which was good fun, useful and informative. We covered lots of the aspects of basic 4WDing including snatch recovery.

In a practical exercise for snatch recovery my car was the one being recovered - everything was set up under close supervision; bow shackles secured, snatch strap attached correctly each end and all that.

As the recovery vehicle pulled away the snatch strap tightened and then with a sickening 'clunk' my bullbar went flying across the field leaving me pretty much were I was to start with.

4 people had each independantly checked my front recovery point (which was attached to the TJM bull bar which in turn was correctly attched to the chassis) and all had said it was a suitable point.

What they could see was the quality of the bolts conencting the bullbar to the chassis were not up to the job as they sheared off the moment pressure was applied to them.

This in turn meant that for a moment the bullbar was being pulled off my car while it was still attached the other side which twisted the bar to an unuseable state and sheared the rest of it off the attachment to the chassis.

I'm a bit annoyed that my bullbar is now scrap but I'm glad it happened in a training exercise rather that a 'real life' situation.

Anyone know of a scrap metal dealer in Sydney?

    Hi Sam
    NOT GOOD!!!!
By any chance was your bar slightly loose? ie enough to vibrate?
I once went to tighten the roobar bolts on the Mrs's Trytoo as I was sick of it vibrating 2 of the bolts sheared where they had been rubbing on the bar, much like metal fatigue, they were grade8 hi tensile bolts.the other2 had the threads worn off in the same area.

I'd be asking Who fitted it, and asking them some serious questions.

they must have used mild steel bolts do you have the old bolts and there should be numbers or or dashs on the head if nothing then cheap bolts were used

Check the stamping on the bolt heads and see what spec (if any) they are, should be good high tensile ones. If the bar was fitted new with poor quality bolts...

Also it sounds like you were being recovered from only one side of the chassis and didn't have both sides bridled across both chassis rails. Is this the case or have I misread things?

To answer all the above questions...

The bar was not loose at all. The car had also recently been given a thorough check over. It was also checked over by the course leader.

I'm assuming the he bar was fitted with the car when it was bought new (10 years ago). The car has never been taken of road before o would never have needed to be recovered which is why this has never come to light before now. I don't know if the dealer or whoever fitted the bar.

I think have the bolts (or remains of) somewhere. They also went flying. I'll have a look next week when I get back from working in Melb.

It was lucky it was just one recovery point to the side which flung the bar to the left away from the recovering vehicle. Also lucky was that everyone was a safe distance away.

I'm glad no one was hurt and hope the vehicle's not to badly off.

When everything is fixed up have a look at the recovery points that Troutbeck sell.

The vehicle itself is fine. Apart from a small dent of the front of the bonnet where the bar hinged back for a moment there is no damage at all. Where the bar connected to the chassis is undamaged on both sides - in fact part of the bullbar is still attached on the one side.
