So what do you call the 5 trailer fuel tanker rigs in the NT??

road trains...

they are usually in one of many configurations (strange that)

most common is a butt load of dog trailers following a normal semi

next most common is a butt load of dog trailers following a b double

Ive seen a couple c tripples with another dog on the back

very very occasionally you will see a flat bed hauling lots of dog trailers.

Speaking of heights, I was in a parking lot today that left me 10mm spare of clearance. We were looking at a Motel with secure parking that was 1.8m & nothing else for us so I told them to P!ss off!! will go elsewhere.
Maybe I should just take the car?? Just not the same as the Landy.

Sorry, should have been more specific. Oops meant 4 not 5 too. Didn't mean road train with dogs. These suckers are 4 tanker trailers and they are basically one bloody great big collection of 3 oversized B-Double trailers and a tanker. Have to be the most train like rig I've seen, unlike the normal ones with the big dog bar between the trailers.

I believe legally on our roads in SA the largest alloud is an AB Quad, which I think currently stands at a maximum of 70 tonne, which is soon to be changed to either 90 or 99 I am not sure.

One of the noisest bunch of guys at work are the permits guys and I know why after supporting them, I smile everytime I see a B double or anything bigger as I know how much their permit to drive on that road that day costs and it aint cheap! Helps keep our rego costs down

Then again the AB Quads I see regularly on my Pt wakefield road travels scare the crap outa me so I must take my hat of to you guys with BIGGER rigs blasting about. That fuel tanker train is impressive!

Having inadvertently started the abcd etc discourse, I asked around...

the letter refers to the turntable, the 'a' is over the drive wheels of the prime mover, the 'b' is over the rear bogies of the 'a' trailer, the 'c' is over the rear bogies of the 'b' trailer, etc etc etc.....

dollies are for dogs is in abcd dogs...

its a great pic of the BP Volvo with four tanks (about 160000litres?)...
an 'A' Quadruple? (bit hard to tell by the angle).....
being a (pin/turntable) tractor/trailer and lotsa dogs,
a three dog night for the long distance driver.....

everyone from peterm on, is basically right....

you can have for example a b triple, (being a b double with a dog), but these wont operate our coastal highways, whereas the c triple will, as in what Ford uses between Geelong and Broadmeadows... if you've seen them, they're a c triple and not a b triple....

the irony, which is where this all started, was that we have 'quarry trucks', and many of them running around here, 52 tonnes rolling, a rigid tipper with a dog... and nobody cares too much, but the 'b double' is sooo dreaded, yet weighs not much more.....

why these 'whingers' whinge so much is beyond me, if you happen to head-on a 10 tonne rigid in your little bloody granny car, it will do just as much damage to you as a 100 tonne c triple, d quaddie, road train or whatever...or even a good old fashoined 'semi'.....

rant rant rant....my next daily driver will be a Peterbuilt, from the movie 'Duel'....
