If cant afford two nice cars, but want the freedom to go anywhere anytime(even once a year). you cant very well buy a family buzz box and expect it to go off road on the other hand you can get your off road to go in the city easy. And sheezzs imagine the size of the carparks just outside the city limits.
I am glad that we have and take the choice to drive what we want.
I rarely drive the landrover in the city, if it is it's because I have to go in while the Mrs is at work, I used to take the Jeep as it was more car like than the Landy but I suppose it's still 4wd so I was wrecking the roads and interfering with where the cyclists want to go while driving something shorter in hight and length than a Territory or a Crysler van thingy which are both 2wd and less of a problem than the white courier vans that I used to drive in the city as well.
Then while were kicking things out of the city for the cyclists sake, why not trams and busses, both of which have very little respect for cyclists or pedestrians and only have little cars in there, no couriers or trucks or why not just ban everyone from the city all together and make it a national park.
This is a stupid argument that will never have an end, if you have a problem with the traffic in the city, dont drive in the city.
If you have seen what a commodore can do to a pedestrian and 60kmh then you would know that it probably doesnt really matter if you have a bullbar/4wd or a truck or a mini, they all do bad enough damage to kill someone at anything above 40kmh and you can see more from a 4wd so it's actually less likely to hit a pedestrian or cyclist.
There will be plenty of this is what some joker from some uni said in his study of these numbers but unless you see it yourself and hear the bones breaking when thier head hits the ground, you then realise all this is Bullsh!t and this debate doesnt matter, at all.
I drive a 4wd and I use it off road, we also have a Carolla that we use as my wifes car for running to work in traffic as I dont like driving the Landy in traffic but thats my prefference.
Im not saying that all of you should drive your 4b's in the city, but it shouldnt be that someone can tell us that we cant.
People ask me all the time why I need a 4wd, and why it's so dirty and disgusting all the time. I have to admit, quite a bit of my driving is what you'd call city now, the central coast roads are pretty congested these days and carrying the bulk of a larger vehicle probably does intimidate quite a few drivers. Too bad my driveway isn't quite so accomodating as theirs:

And it's like that -after- two weeks of no rain. There are days when my Rodeo (a 2wd) just doesn't even make it at all...
So sorry to say that the city is stuck with my cars, whether they like it or not... And honestly, for all the rave about fitting into car parks...I laugh, I truely do, when I see a Charade or an Excel double parked next to the LR.
This isn't a case of what to drive at all, but realistically -who- is driving...

why a major city why not any built up area which i'm sure even most people that off road have to drive though???
and how do you not know that the people driving the fourby's dont have boats or caravans to pull hence the fourby's
i'm not arguing the pedestrian safety aspect of course a fourby will cause more damage but no more than a truck or a bus so maybe a MAJOR city should be pedestrian only!!! then everyone is safe..........

Mc R riding in a truck would not change my opinion of them, i am quite emphatic, I believe the BIG trucks should not be on the road. They don't worry me when i drive, they get too close I get too slow, and the fingers do the dialling, very simple.

Incidently Bill , her father died on saturday and his funeral is tomorrow and I am giving the eulogy. Ca of the prostate.

JohnE, if you slowdown and try to annoy the trucky by flipping the bird you deserve what ever you get from them as there is no place for people like you on the road as you are not driving to the conditions, you are trying to dictate your own conditions to all other road users.
Im sure your not a complete misguided soul but your veiws on this subject are warped and in some ways your actions could be extremely dangerous, maybe not for you but for the trucky and anyone following him and you may well not even be aware of the accident you cause from trying to be king of the road.
Whats your veiw on your average Falcon/Commodore towing 28' to 30' over loaded caravans or tripple horse floats, they are well under weight to be towing these things and can be very difficult to control and are usually under braked for the weight but not many people complain about them.
How do you know until you try, get in a truck and take a ride through a built up area and see how much work these guys do and like I said, they are working against the clock all the time so if your gonna have a dig at log book rigging, have a go at the trucking companies managers and warehouse logistical staff who dont seem to realise that it takes time to get from point A to point B.
You seem like a pretty level headed bloke but your not making a freind here buy taking a stupid one eyed attitude that has some fairly serious reasons behind them but that doesnt excuse you from having to drive to the road laws.
I have also been run off the road by trucks, 1 was a shear accident caused by being in the wrong place at the wrong time and the other was because the driver over used his brakes and had non when he came to a corner where I was as well.
As I have stated as well I have been involved in a relatively serious truck accident from behind the other steering wheel and I can tell you, it is a hell of a lot more scarey than it is in a car or 4b when you think your about to drive over the top of some one.
I no longer drive a truck as Ive changed jobs and I dont really miss it for all the crap I had to put up with while driving around melbourne, most of which was in a 28' ridgid which is quite small but still copped the idiot attitude that you explained.
If a truck is getting close to you, it will most likely for a reason, if he has no reason that you can see, call the cops and report him, dont take it into your own hands to try to sort it out as you just make things worse.
Rant over, Im staying away from this thread from now on because this has really p!ssed me off.
