    Alice becomes dry city

Drinking alcohol in public is to be banned in Alice Springs from August 1.

The ban, approved by the Northern Territory Licensing Commission, will apply in all public areas, including the main thoroughfare Todd Mall, parks, camps and suburbs, according to an AAP report.

Only two areas - the Telegraph Station picnic area and Namatjira's camp will be exempt.

Commission chairman Richard O'Sullivan told AAP the ban was to be implemented to ensure residents felt safe, but also because anti-social behaviour and public drinking issues impact negatively on the tourist industry in the town and the public perception as an attractive place to visit.

A major advertising drive will be run to inform residents and tourists of the ban, which will be reviewed after one year.

There's a number of initiatives being trailed across the Territory to curb anti-social behaviour associated with alcohol problems.

Where I live they are looking at introducing a scheme where by you need a residence card to be able to purchase take-away alcohol. This is already in place on Groote and is working very well apparently.

I feel very sorry for the law makers, they are caught between knowing prohibition doesn't work and trying to work with tourism and without being racial discriminatory.

I noticed that in Derby, WA, last week that Woolworths (Mac's Liquor) won't sell you alcohol after 7pm (maybe it was 8pm) unless you arrive in a car.

As Crump has noted, all the laws in the world don't make any difference if they are not enforced. We rather suspect that the new laws here won't make a great deal of difference.

I saw some ****ed guys one night pretending to be passengers of a vehicle
they walked into a drive thru , and the drive thru liquor store manager refused to serve them alcohol, it was after a certain time , so what you said is correct.

Why would any respectful person be at Wollies after 7pm anyway. I was passing through a couple of years ago and my family and I wanted lunch and a pee, not in that order. Wollies had no dunnies, they told me to try the BP roadhouse over the road. Flamin' huge locks on the dunny doors so I asked the girl behind the counter for the key. NO was the answer! I offered to buy lunch for ourselves for use of the toilets but NO again!

Where can I use a public toilet was my question, up the street was the reply. A drive up the street only found us in a park with about 50 locals, no we did not feel safe going, and the Defender would probably be missing when we came back anyway, or the wheels at least.

Down to the Council office we went in desperation, where are your toilets? Oh here are the keys, help yourself. One disabled female and one disabled male toilet was all that we could use. Dump of a place.

I won't mention that 2 weeks before after crossing the Gibb River Road we stayed at a motel/caravan park who were very, very, rude to me when I tried washing off the red mud from the Landie and camper. They said read the signs, what signs I said, the ones in the toilets! We stayed in the motel so could not see the signs as they were in the caravan park toilets which were locked.

Dump of a town, they should offer it the the Indonesians!

Well that's my experience of Derby, I feel better now.

I live in a town of 400 people with 2 fulltime police officers, and you can still drink in public if your the right sort of person, why?? Because if I have to arrest you its a 2 and a 1/2 hour drive to the nearest lock up where you are classed as being safe from yourself. Its only a 5minute walk to the lock up where I would end up though.

Technically it almost was/is dry. There is a law stating that you can't drink within 2 km of a licensed premises. Because we have so many alcohol outlets (97 at last count!), most of the town falls inside that area anyway.

It still doesn't seem to have any effect on the amount of drunk black fellas you see every day.
