    Govt/RTA stupidity

Thought you wags here might like this:

Byron Bay township is a constant traffic gridlock, don't go there if you're in a hurry.

A short bypass, maybe 1 kilometre, can be easily built and alleviate the problem but....

the proposed new road has to go over a rail line...

The NSW Govt has said 'no more level crossings' due to the potential danger of trains impacting cars and vice versa etc.

    ....here's the 'but'

...the rail line hasn't seen a train for more than three years and any future service on this line is unlikely...

current status is impasse, traffic gets worse, and nothing is being done...

    your comments will be appreciated....

a little background re Byron: The local council is a hot bed of loonies, who automatically reject any form of development... an overpass, being a 'big thing' would send them into apoplexy and the resident hippies would see any 'big thing' as 'big brother' or whatever.....you have to live here to understand just what a nutcase Byron Bay is.......visit sometime if you haven't already, now, back to the impending comments......

Yer your right stevo, Unanderra is a good one, but what about Dunmore, I have seen cars two abreast on that crossing on public holidays.

I used work Parramatta Rd Signal Box - the one between Granville and Clyde. There couldn't be a much busier level crossing Sydney.

The procedure there is to put on the bells and lights and, when the traffic has stopped, lower the boom gates.

You'd be surprised how many drivers stop on the railway tracks as soon as they hear the bells and/or see the lights. I've had to go out to them to get them to move off the tracks!

You wouldn't be surprised by the number who race to get through after the booms have started to descend.

that would be the logical solution, or is that it is logical that is the problem.

The average level crossing costs a sh1tload in maintanence each year, an overpass would cost millions to build and maintain, a bunch of holiday makers, hippies and business owners would not bring enough legal tender into the local community to justify the amount of spending required. Besides wouldn't a bypass take people away from the business district in the town.

I like it but the hippies who live there would stone him to death for driving over a tree with a 4wd. Mind you they're usually stoned very near to death themselves, in a different way.
