I know there's a Discovery 1 and Discovery 2. I have learnt there was a 2 door model with a 200tdi then there was a 300tdi (mine) and then a TD5. And now offcourse the latest versions which I assume is a Disco 3.

So what makes or defines a Discovery 1 or Discovery 2. I have been assuming that mine was a 1 seeing it still had the oroginal body dimensions but with back doors and a 4 cylider diesel am I correct. Series 2 being with the extended boot and newer 5 cylinder diesels and bigger V8's
Simplest way to tell them apart is to look at the tail lights.

If the tail lights are low down, it is a Discovery 1.

If the tail lights are high up, it is a Discovery 2.

If the tail lights are high up and it has the rear indicators in the main tail light clusters rather than in the bumper with the rear fog lights, it is a Discovery 2 update, commonly referred to as a Discovery 2a. This model also has the more modern looking headlights, as opposed to the plain rectangular headlight shape common to both the Discovery 1 and 2.

The new more square shape is the Discovery 3 and now the Discovery 4, which again can be distinguished by the tail lights (D3 has predominantly red tail lights, D4 has predominantly clear tail light lenses) and the grille (D3 has a more plain "billet" style grille while D4 has a grille which looks much more like the latest Range Rover Sport.

Of course, there are those out there who change the headlights and tail lights in a Discovery 2 to confuse us and try to convince us that they have a D2a. No doubt, similar modifications will be made to D3's with time.

There are of course many other differences between the models, but until you are more familiar with them, the above is probably the easiest way to tell the models apart.
