Without getting all Trainspotter about it, you are pretty much on the money, D2 came in about 99 with the TD5 and 4.0v8, all before that were D1.

Being new to the Land Rover scene Im not up with all the various models. I own a 95 Discovery Tdi.
I know there's a Discovery 1 and Discovery 2. I have learnt there was a 2 door model with a 200tdi then there was a 300tdi (mine) and then a TD5. And now offcourse the latest versions which I assume is a Disco 3.
So what makes or defines a Discovery 1 or Discovery 2. I have been assuming that mine was a 1 seeing it still had the oroginal body dimensions but with back doors and a 4 cylider diesel am I correct. Series 2 being with the extended boot and newer 5 cylinder diesels and bigger V8's

As a '95 model, yours should be the Update model with the revised (more modern) dash layout - similar to the Discovery Series 2.
About the only carried over body part from the Series 1 Disco to the Series 2 is the rear door. All other body panels are different.
Also the axles/hubs are different on the D2 - they are more like the P38A Range Rover whereas the D1 used the time-honoured and inexpensive to repair system used on Landies since about 1948.

Imho, Ron, that Discovery was probably the last model that could be diagnosed & worked upon by someone with normal mechanical experience. EFi & much much more.
Then LR got clever.![]()
As 4bee says - Discovery 1 was essentially a classic Rangrover with a different body. Many, if not most, mechanical components are either the same as or interchangeable with Rangerover parts back to 1970, and in concept at least Landrover designs back to 1948. This means that mechanically they are well understood and most parts are readily available and relatively cheap.
Discovery 2, although it looks very similar to Discovery 1, and superficially is very similar mechanically, has very few components carried over from the Discovery 1, making parts, while still very easy to find, relatively expensive or very expensive compared to the 1. Even the wheels are different, whereas all Landrover wheels up to then are (more or less) interchangeable. On the good side, you get a vehicle that is newer and has had a lot of the relatively minor problems of the D1 fixed (mind you, probably got a new lot) and is overall a much more modern vehicle.

Hi guys and girls, I'm new to the Aulro forum. I own a 94 Disco v8i auto runs OK but very poor fuel economy. Any common problems I should know about before I start trying to fix it. Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers Davidjm
I have a 95 and an 02...love them both (both V8s on LPG). For road use the D2 is much better but if you spent your life off road and compared stock with stock the softer set up of the D1 is easier to live with. For straight traction CDL and traction control is best, but if you were modding both the D1 lifted up and with lockers is a weapon. Having said that with a family of 5 the lack of a centre rear lap sash belt means mine does not get a lot of use these days.
Cheers
Welcome David,
The older Rover V8 has a reputation for consuming vast amounts of petrol.
Many are now running on LPG conversions.
I bought a diesel Disco for this reason.
Maybe you could check out the Discovery part of Pinnacle section of this site to see if your fuel consumption is worse than average.
The V8 does sound great though.
