I have not heard this one.
They can't be serious, can they?
The tourism industry would fold big time.
It would be political suicide if they closed the eastern beach just like they have on the western side.
"has had extensive community consultation"... "would better serve the public good".... suffice to say the gov. said screw you.
What a load of bollocks. How is closing a beach suppose to better serve the public good if the flaming public can't get to it?!?!
****ing pollies.

Just had a read of the letter in the first post. It's not all that bad. They only want to close 18km around Hook Point. I must say that that would be a good idea as long as they maintain the old mining track to Dilli Village. This used to be the only high tide route around Hook Point anyway.
It would not worry those who travel from Hervey Bay.
Hook point has claimed several vehicles when it gets eroded. High tide, big swell, eroded beach = disaster for those foolish to travel near high tide.
All is not lost.
I was up at Fraser a couple of months ago, the first time I had been around Hook Point (on from Hervey Bay before). I went on through the high tide access road - there are quite a few access tracks to the beach (closed ATM - perhaps that's part of the plan as well?) and came off via the beach.
The 18km between the barge access around the point would, from memory, not even reach to the end of the road - in other words, the area bypassed by the inland road would be the worst possible scenario for closure.
I for one would LIKE an area of the Fraser beaches closed to vehicular traffic - it's more like a road than a beach! And this is the only eastern stretch that could be closed without obstructing traffic to the settlements and other camping areas.
The Hook Point beach access was difficult due to fallen trees and sandbanks - well, relative to the rest of the Fraser beaches. There must be regular rescues of tourists and the inevitable question of how much interference there should be to enable vehicle access while protecting conservation values.
My only hope is that the bypass road is maintained - when I was there the corrugations were the worst I have ever experienced. But perhaps it was just the Series III![]()

My first trip along the inland road was in a series 2A.
Damage = bottom smashed in esky (dry ice), smashed primus lantern glass, 2 leaking 20l fuel cans (could not afford Jerrys, but soon bought some).
My fault as I was going 80kph on the bitumen then gravel and smash bang!
Response from Petition to block the closing of Eastern beaches on Frasier Island
I cant believe the closure, but I'm really having trouble with the fact they changed the name of the island in honour of an American sitcom, Kelsey Grammer must be so proud.![]()
