when I read that article in the SMH I noted that they concentrated on particulate emissions while also pointedly stating that other carcinogens were emitted, and while stating that unleaded also emitted similar carcinogenic substances, they didn't print anynumbers for a side by side comparison.

    Curious, eh. ?

Some UK research uni developed a starter/generator for turning a Tdi into a hybrid. That coupled to LPG fumigation should see the Defender get a gov't rebate instead of a Tax.

Seriously though, that's such an ignorant & cruel tax.

I remember the days when Land Rover owners blockaded parliment to stop the sale of Land Rover to Ford. I doubt such political will remains now.

Interestingly in Athens, in an effort to reduce traffic pollutants they introduced a system (years ago) whereby odd and even number plated cars were allowed to drive on alternate days. This misguided bully boy environmental knee jerk reaction led to the following :

every city household got 2 cars (one with even & one with odd plates)
older cars became cheap, so everyone living in the villages could now afford a car.

net effect - more cars on the road = more fuel tax for the gov't.

I think this move will mean that every farmer in the UK will now aquire a fleet of well priced and very capable vehicles.

    Sad news.

OK, Let's get this in contaxt. This is dealing with smog in London, not greenhouse gasses or anything else. Petrol doesn't create smog. Does biodiesel - well someone here will know but I suspect that vege oil would still particulate in an older diesel.

I can see an obvious loophole for Series/ Defender drivers. Vehicles manufactured for off-road use and with limited on-road capability (does that sound familiar?) can be exempted. They say farm machinery is one example. I think a spray rig on the back should do the job nicely.

Nothing surprses me anymore in the UK. Thats why i am here
The govermant is just making up things to gain more tax from everyone who is law abiding and pays their tax (and give everything to bogons and people who don't want to work)
But the way there are getting away with it is to claim it is all for green issues and therefore green tax. But i can't see any money being spend on green issues . Just goes into the goverment pocket.

They have (since i moved here, 18 months ago) made the MOT (roadworthy) alot tougher, mean its going to make it lot differcult to get you car though every year.
Baned all Bull bars , winches. and adding anything over 1kg to you car. (how that works not eeryone is sure , after al a set of spot lights is more than that) This means make a winch challenge truck is impossable

want to bring in a charge by mile for your car so Like Etoll but every mile you go that charge you £1

They are now going to charge extra to empty your bins (what the hell are you paying rates for then)

And bring up the thing again to charge you tax on the profit you make when you sell your house. Which is not profit anyway because it not your fault you house goes up by 100,00 in 6 years that you have lived in it. And all over houses have gone up the same too.

So to sum up and sorry to say , I think alot more Poms will be on there way over here.

And that tax in london would be fun for them as the Buses in london are the worset poluters anyway, and the taxis are not alot better. But i never used to go to london as it was a Sh*t hole anyway

    Anyway rant off

I often have this discussion with friends here who are complaining about how bad things are!

We've been here 6 months and it's the best decision I ever made!

I just hope to God the politicians here look at how screwed up the UK has become and not do anything similar...would be a shame to ruin another great country.

Last stats I saw showed a fair percentage of mid-high income earners leaving every year and several times that amount of asylum seekers and "workers" from non-EU countries going in. Can only happen for so long. Remember the one-handed carpenter the Home Office gave a work permit to? Words fail me sometimes...

What annoys me though, is it was plainly obvious what this bunch of idiots were going to do from half way through their first term - so what does the electorate do? Vote them in twice more and then moan about the results. The bits you've talked about are a fraction of the stupid, ill thought out, and stealth tax generating things they've done while systematically destroying the NHS, police, education and defence systems with excessive micro-management, admin jobs and target based agendas, and then told us they need another 5 years to finish the job! And people still voted for them this time round. The mind boggles. So glad I'm here and out of it all.

    Phew...feel better now.

Particulate Matter (PM) air pollution is the deadly part of air pollution, it is the microscopic particles produced by incomplete combustion that carry toxic and Cancer causing chemicals into your Lungs and Bloodstream. The largest source of this pm air pollution in Australia is the Domestic Wood Heater (DWH), NPWS and State Forests Burnoffs and Bushfires in that order of magnitude. In Sydney during winter 2/3 of all of the air pollution (which includes all Diesel emissions) comes from DWH's on a week day and 3/4 on the weekends. So instead of these Bureaucrats wanting to ban diesels from our roads they should be concentrating on banning DWH's, which would solve the problem immediately, Regards Frank.

Trouble is that some will believe some of the ideas are "good" and try to get them introduced in Australia.. whilst others will believe exactly the same of some other of the ideas. Net effect? We end up with all the same rules / regs. and everyone blames everyone else for it.

Also unfortunately the pollies will look and be amazed at how well the UK is doing because they are absolutely rolling in tax money that they can spend on their pays and supers and expense trips and and and.... so our pollies will happily follow suite and then crow about all the good they've done for the environment, knowing full well the only good they've done is to their coffers

Angry at politics in Australia? Me? Never. Anyone got another 500 people who want to sign up to a new party - the "common sense" party? I only need 500 sigs, really

Luckily the UK has wasted most of the tax money on the immigrants who don't want to work and various other stupid schemes....so although the politicians have overpaid themselves as you'd expect, I think deep down, underneath their own marketing, they do realise they've f***ed up and are now looking at what/who they can blame...and as they've been in power for almost 10 years and inherited a good economy and working set of public services, they're going to struggle with that one....

At least we've got a decent immigration policy here - I had to jump through loads of hoops to get here, and can't claim a thing for two years even if we needed to, and that's exactly how it should be!

If a 2000 model TD5 and a 2004 model TD5 are identical engine wise, why not just ban the 2000 model?
