Legal issues with custom barwork?
Just curious are there legal issues with adding your own barwork to your 4wd? i was contemplating replacing the plastic footsteps on my series 1 disco with some nice shiny custom ones... anyone got pics they would like to share?
Cheers

Look up the TAC website and that may help answer some of your questions. The only thing that I am really aware of is if the vehicle has air bags, then the bull bar must be air bag compatable.
I would hazard to guess that there is some where written about how wide you could go with side steps and min ground clearance. I have buit custom side steps in the past and have stuck with going no wider than the wheels and did not have an problems. I have never heard of any 4wd being pulled up with respect to sidesteps. I am in the middle of designing my own sill protectors / rock sliders. It is just a matter of finding time to build them. Once built I will post some pics.
Best of luck.

If you get a chance, go visit 'Pick and Payless' wreckers, Tattersall Rd Blacktown - there is a Disco 1 there with a set of decent side steps (As of Thur they are still there- painted black). Their prices aren't too bad, bearing in mind you have to take them off yourself.
If you have a bit of spare cash, I can recommend these

I have a set and reckon they're OK - just enough of a step, and sufficent protection against rocks. Sometimes Coopers at Tempe have them in stock, othertimes you might have to pay freight of $30-50 from Vic.

I have these on my D2 the lra ones (the ones in the link) they are excellent, not a true hardcore rockslider, just a replacement for the fibreglass sills & will stop some fairly substantial damage if need be.
Took an hour or so to fit & look really neat.

Sometimes it is more about having fun making something and saying that you did it yourself. I checked the VIC roads website and only issue I found were. Min ground clearnce is 100mm and the max width of any vehicle is 2.5 meters.
If you do make your own, I would suggest do not make them too wide as it then becomes a pain getting in and out as you are trying to avoid them and rubbing your pant legs along them. That is ok if out in the bush, but not so good when going out in the good duds.

As long as you have a welder and an angle grinder you can make anything.
I used 2" gal pipe once for a set of side steps. They were fastened to the frame, were very stout. Could use a high lift jack under them aswell. Saved alot of body damage to the Nissan.
The ones I am making for the Disco will most likely be attached to the body mounts in three places. I feel that should be strong enough for the playing I do.
