Another Land Rover experience?
What a 24 hours with the fender.
Heading off on a few weeks up north in warmer pastures. Finally sorted the whole baby seat drama for the new one on the scene. Put all the seats back in then discover the rear seat will not lock into place. Lock buggered.
Discover in loading the car my roof lining has started to get major sag.
Drop girlfriends car at panel shop to repair roo damage while we are away. He decides to point out to corrosion spots around rivets in the roof, and thinks the need work.
Drive a few hundred, by this stage Albany Hwy pitch black, trucks all over it. Infront of a truck with oncoming traffic and all headlights, spots and dash lights go black. Very very scary.
Drive into Williams holding on the high beam flicker switch. Turns out my light switch is broke so I spend an hour in the dark pulling apart the sterring column and hard wiring to bypass the switch . Wish I knew were your house was Andy??
Only recently replaced the larger high beam switch.
Too make matters worse this morning I almost pull my door handle off as the inside bolt has come off and now requires the inside door skin to be removed.
All from a well looked after 2001 Extreme. It's not that these things are serious, just very frustrating from a car that is in good nick.
Another Land Rover experience?
G'day nornalup, Same thing happened to me and my wife driving to Darwin. We just filled up at Madarancka ( bad spelling) and about 50 clicks out- instant darkness. I ***** myself and thought I fell asleep at the wheel.
Aparently having the driving lights on draws far too much curret through the headlight switch. Hence the swich melts from over heating. Check to make sure that your driving lighs draw current through the batt not the switch and put a fuse on the wire to the head light switch.
Cheers easo
Once the damage is done it's to late. I have relays for my lights and spots but mine failed.
sounds like it's time to upgrade the wiring loom to relays![]()

Nah I wasn't complaining about the lack of creature comforts in the defender, you missed my point. I am just jacked about the finishing build quality of the defenders.
I love my rig for it's simplicity and what it allows me to do. What I hate is all the small things that don't reflect the quality/design thought that was put into the rest of the vehicle.
