At least the Dealer was honest and said he would not offer anywhere near it's value. He even sujested selling private as the other yards would offer simmilar.

You are right though. When I was looking there would have been 10 V8s for sale for each Tdi. I never saw any Tdis for under $10k but have since.

That was looking in all the Eastern states too.

Im never intent on selling the Disco Im more than happy with it, Its just this particular car caught my eye. Im not gointg to sell the Disco Privatly or otherwise now. If the yard offered me a fair price I may well of gone ahead.A fair price would of beem around $8500 to $9500 for a trade in. Now even two other yards agree my car was worth around the $8500 mark as a trade so its not just me, this pr!k was just trying to rob me.The red book values it as a resale at $12500 so yes $8500 would of been fair.
AS I said I wasnt intent on selling the Disco anyway so Theres no way I would except such a low price.

The cars to good to use as a bush basher as some one put some where, its a standard car and has very limited off road use and is excellent condition.

I bought a $26K P38 from a LR dealer over 3 years ago and got $9K trade for my immaculate 88 classic, which I hear they sold later for 7. I was back at said dealer in April and the salesman said my "tired old range rover" was worth maybe $2K for a trade on a new disco3, I might get a bit more when I was ready to buy he said. He wasn't to happy when I said "thanks mate - will just go see the service guys and pickup my washer bottle grommit". Aparently its all because my cars a GEMS P38, doesn't have factory SATNAV, has a dent in the bonnet, and has over 125k on the odometer. How many 12 year old cars have done less than 125K's?????

I have no issue my car is not worth what I paid for it, but I know I could get mid teens for it and thus I would expect as a trade at least 2/3rds that, but hey they are out to make money and the next fool in line after me might say heck yeah give me that 2 grand for my car and be happy.

Nope Im not getting it. 3 Reasons: 1 the trade in offer was an insult they bang it up the Kiber pass. 2: The people in the know on this forum say dont go there and keep the Disco, I respect some one who owns a car and says dont buy one!. 3 The P38 had problumes the air suspention didnt work properly and it had a load ticking noise when it was started up.
adn 4 my Disco is a very good car and im still happy with it!

A guy at work traded his EF Fairmont Ghia on a 4.8 POOtrol.Paid top dollar,they gave him $2000 trade.
He wouldnt listen,told him keep the EF,negotiate a outright buy on the POOtrol,you will bargain them down a few extra grand,then you sell the falcoon privetely for $2000,you effectively get $4000 for the Falcoon.
Once you introduce a trade in you loose all your bartering advantage!!!!

LandyAndy is entirely right. If you must buy a car from a dealer, find the car, then buy it for cash money and haggle big time.

Remember, the longer the car has sat on the yard, the more it owes them.

Keep an eye out for fresh stock, then strike.

Once you've knocked off 25% of the asking price, and have settled on the deal, then sell off whatever, privately. Dealers dont really like trade-ins, they're just another problem.

Also, any used car from a dealer sells inclusive of 10% GST, so a $10,000 selling price is $9,000 (ish) to the dealer, as the GST goes to the tax office.

GST for some, is also a claim item, factor this in to the purchase price.
