I was told my 2001 Defender 130 with over $25,000 worth of mods and accessories was worth max $12,000 as a trade in.

The only reason you would trade a vehicle is for convenience. If you want to get anywhere near what you think it is worth then sell it privately.

When looking for my Disco1 I looked at a top of the line 1996 model V8 with a rear air locker, ARB sliders, ARB bullbar, HR towbar and electric brake controller, 2in lift. It was being sold by a family man accountant type who had it to tow his camper. Had about 150k on it.

It seemed to be in pretty good nic except for rust in the alpine windows.

He was asking $12k which I turned down as I wanted a base model. This was about 12 months ago.

The dealer is right. V8 Disco1s aren't worth squat.

I looked at shifting over to an oiler at one stage & one particular yard offered $5k for my V8 with under 140k on it, compared to the $10k they wanted for a 3yr older 200tdi with just shy of 300k and in shabby condition.
    That's just how it works.
As another option; the last bike I sold wasn't getting any bites after a couple of mths from several ads I'd placed, it really needed exposure to capture someone's interest. I put it in a busy shop on consignment and it sold in a bit over a week. I paid a small fee but still got $ that I was happy with for it.

One of the things people modifying vehicles need to understand is that the modifications are never going to increase the value of the vehicle by anything close to what they cost. In fact, in many cases they will reduce the value of the vehicle, the only exception being when the modification is something the buyer wants. But unless it is a common mod such as a bullbar, don't count on that person being looking for a vehicle when you are selling!

Sadly the dealers know that they have something we want and also that we want to sell something that we don't want.

That's why used car sales people don't have too many friends outside of their industry.

I think the jist of the post, in my mind, was how unashamed sales people are. I wanted to trade my Peugeot 307 in for a 2001 Td5 worth 27k, my car being only 2 years old, with 16k on the clock (worth 21k privatly sold) and the sales guy had the audacity to offer my 3k for the car, thats right, 3k!!!

So, naturally you think, these guys will loose more customers by insulting them than getting sales.

The other option is to get lpg on it, thats only a few gs investment and would be worth keeping.

Could it be that you were too honest and they were not, or did you make enough money to retire ?

Ain't that the truth. When I was selling my Disco a few years ago it had a few extras such as long range tank, 2" lift, OME suspension etc. Potential buyers were asking me if it had been off-road, course not!

One said he would only buy it if I replaced the LR tank with a standard one.
