Its simple, plants make sugars which are just carbon chains, petrochemical fuels are carbon chains. With technology we can make different chains from other chains if that makes sense. They can do it, they just wont because the governments make to much tax from petrochemical fuels.

My grapes might be worth more as fuel than going into bottles of Sauvignon Blanc.....

I read (in Overlander) today about another development in diesel fuels. GTL Gas to Liquid Diesel.

It's supposed to have much lower emissions, a cetane rating of about 70; but it reduces economy by about 5%.

Finally, a use for the dreaded plastic shopping bag....

And a use for all the fruit that gets tossed out....

I'll go and get all the oranges that are rotting on the ground, next door....

If its far cheaper, then 5% reduced economy shoulden't be a drama.

No, they call it a "Premium Product" for which they will charge a "Premium Price"

I suppose if it allows those poor Land Rover owners in London to keep their cars, then it's worth it for them. They reckon they make it from natural gas reserves, as opposed to crude oil. You'd think that once production started it would be cheaper. I'm guessing production will start, as it seems it'll have a higher profit margin. We all know how oil companies are currently struggling on their narrow margins. (where's the emoticon for sarcasm?).

Slagging off the poor oil providers, tisk tisk

Caltex, today, posted is report and made a poor $235,000,000 profit in Aussie for the past 12 months..... not much... take out some senior exec wages / bonuses and the profit maybe.......

...the major banks post profit figures of 20 times the Caltex figure.

We all pay what we think is way too much for the drop of black gold, but
what is wrong with a business trying to make a profit?

The oilers may be on about 10% margin, which is bugger all, when you consider Woolies buys spuds for 4 cents a kg and sells them for about $2 a kg.

I'm not defending the oilers, nor am I on any oilers payroll..

However, the bizarre part of this is; when you next fill your fuel tank, watch the fuel flowing into the tank and consider how long it took to get where its going. What's falling into the tank is millions of years old and will soon disappear as carbon etc.......its supply of energy to propel a car is fleeting......
