off to Adelaide you say

Hey folks!
Ditching Sydney for the more laid back lifestyle of Adelaide in a few weeks time. Looking forward to clean air, a peak hour that lasts 15 minutes, and some of the best wine in the country!
The only snag is, I'll be leaving behind my mates that I used to go 4WD-ing with around Sydney, and wondered if there was anyone on this forum that knows of good places to go Land Rover-ing around Adelaide, and people to do it with? It's never as much fun on your own...
Cheers,
Greg

130's rule
hate to say, but the 15minute peak hour has been extended to about 20mins!!
Depends on your definition of "around". South down to Robe is some fantastic beach driving, along to Beachport etc. North you get to the Flinders Ranges which has tons of excellent camping and across on Yorke Peninsular theres good fishing beaches. That's all quite a few hours of driving though.
I don't know all that much that's close to Adelaide though. We go to Goolwa beach and camp in the sandhills (about 1 Hr from Adelaide) if we need an easy 1 night under the stars where we can take the dogs.
Hope you like the slow-down. It is WAY less exciting than Sydney or Melb, but lots of good festivals etc and as you mentioned the wine. We grow Sauvignon Blanc in the Adelaide Hills so drink lots of that please!
Cheers
David
Let us know when you get down here - I can take you out if you like!
As other have pointed out two main areas are robe and Flinders.
Flinders is around 4 - 5 hours, depending if you are travelling south or north, and some fantastic pay and free tracks, unbeleivable camping and scenery.
Robe, starts a coastal stretch that runs down to beachport, and then again runs on down to carpenter rock. This last stretch is much more remote, and fantastic sand driving, but sztretches can be incredibly tretcherous - dont go alone unless you are competant sand driver and have lots of experience.
Other places around are the border track - 3 odd hours drive to Pinaroo, which is a leasurely two day drive with a great camp spot in the middle at red bluff. mostly easy going undulating sand tracks through arid desert, with a few good sand hills, and a few good claypans which can be fairly good fun.
There are also a number of tracks in sedan - less than 2 hours drive away, but mostly only fun after rain...

Adelaide... Strange but likeable city.
As mentioned before, Robe & Flinders but then you're also in a good position for other tracks around the Simpson, Oodnadatta, etc...
You're also only 70Km or so from one of the best wine regions in the world. I suggest you get yourself on first name terms with the guys at Rockfords.

Hey guys!
Thanks for all the feedback!
Martin - Look forward to making contact once we've settled in down there!
Spudboy - I'll be working on North Terrace, and living in the short term in the CBD, but then looking for something to buy later on...
Thanks again folks!
