My first 4WD trip ended up costing us $100 recovery. Even though the Land Rover fell on it's side, lost a tank of fuel and was left to scramble up a steep slope in heavy rain, we managed to self recover.

The Patrol on the other hand.... he broke a FWH, even with chains (lent to us by some deer hunters) he couldn't make it up the steep hill. All day to winch him 30m to the top. The deer hunter returns to get his chains, the Patrol can't make it up any other hills. (Dark by now), the Landy makes it to Woods Point and the local guy comes out with a Blitz and some chains. Luckily we didn't incur a towing surcharge, as the chains afforded the Patrol enough traction to make it out. (By which time it was snowing).

The $100 got us the recovery, plus a nights accommodation in a warm cabin with beds and a pot belly stove; which was a lot more comfortable than the previous night - 5 blokes sleeping in a 109.

The funniest thing was, after we all fell asleep in pitch darkness (in the Land Rover, the previous night) someone woke up and yelled
    -"I think we're rolling!"
And with nothing to take bearings on, it's led to a freaky minute.

I used to spend hours with my mates every time it snowed in Lithgow heading up scenic hill to Mt.Victoria. The idea of this is we blasted past the cops at the road block one day & yelled if they caught us we would stop.....
Point being we were out to play & discovered 6 cars stuck in the snow along the road. We towed ALL the cars to the top of the hill & then with one fourby at the front & one at the rear we took them all down the hill into town...
    Time about 5 hours
    Recovery Fee NOTHING

We could of charged heaps for that to I suppose but we were doing what was right. Every year after that we used to head up there if it snowed & do what had to be done ( cops never stopped us again....lol)

Will always stop & help people who need recovery & NEVER expect anything for it.... well maybe a thanks. Recovery gear is for exactly that, If everyone was to go with an attitude of "I want money for recovery" then maybe it makes us just a step closer to the tin top tossers ( car drivers).
Being bought up in the bush we just helped people in need because we could & yes some of them were rude Bastards that should of been left there.

Being a (supposedly)free country we all have the right to recover people as we see fit. I for one sleep well enough knowing I helped because I could.
