In search of a v8 fender

howdy all, im interested in purchasing an early v8 defender(not unlike the one advertised on here in qld). dont really want to go 2000klms to get it. would prefer manual but beggars can t be choosers. let me know if you know of one.

Do you mean a 110, aka County? Defenders didn't come in V8 but the 110 is the same vehicle before they came up with a sexy name for it.

They were reasonably popular and come up for sale periodically. Just search your favorite sales site for County and/or Land-Rover 110 and/or 3.5.

Mate, we are all learning stuff! It's only a name, anyway. Just wasn't 100% sure you weren't looking for a vehicle someone had modified (e.g. there are a few automatic Defenders around).

If you are looking in the paper or on a sales site you shold find what you're after.

thats close, but planned to go earlier so i could get one cheaper. the one on the link you posted, is that around the right one money for age?

If EVERYTHING was perfect, the money might be OK, if you really wanted one badly. Expect quite a bit less - say around 1/2 what they are asking. I'd think that around 5k might be closer to the mark for age and condition.

the red one advertised in the market on here would have to be a good buy then?

That red one of Mark2's is well priced, it has a known history from 2 of the forum members, and being fitted with an LT95 4 speed (which is a lot stronger box than the later 5 speed Lt77) the sales info is honest, and brake shoes and disc pads are quite cheap and readily available, it has the opening front vents I think, which is an added bonus, and the chassis is fairly rust free,and a good Firewall

that is the most important bit, the extractors are a bonus, and these carby models convert to gas very well, I have a friend that has an 84 model w/- LT95 and he has 240,000 Klm most of it on gas

they also can have different transfer gears fitted to up the ratios, or you can fit an Overdrive, front bumper are interchangeable across many models.

The red one in the market used to be mine. I sold it because I had the sh*ts with the motor in it and didn't have the time, inclination or money to fix it.

Mark has swapped the motor (which was a long-stroke conversion) with a 3.5 he had in his ute. I can't speak from experience regarding the present motor, but I gather there was nothing wrong with it, he just wanted the extra ponies the 4.3 offered.

If you ask nicely, Mark might throw in one of the gas conversion kits he has around the place.

I think the money is reasonable. Considering the motor that came out was only running on 6 cylinders when he picked it up, and it now has a decent motor running on all 8, and knowing what he paid for it and the time spent, it's a solid enough machine for the money.

Knowing what I paid for it

Let's just say that you would be getting much better value!

EDIT: The 5 speed in the late V8 County's is the tough but agricultural Santana LT85 5-speed. It's still used in the Santana military and commercial vehicles. It wasn't smooth enough for the more refined Discovery and Range Rover and so the LT77 was developed and used across the range. It's a reliable box, and generally preferred for touring use, though I'm a fan of the 4-speed myself.
