As a past and future bicycle commuter, I think there are polite ways of riding in mixed vehicular company, just as there are polite ways of driving a Series Landy 
Most roads have enough room for the cars to pass provided the cyclist keeps left. Some cars don't leave enough room, some leave too much.
As for 100km/hr versus 15 - highways and freeways are safer for cyclists than suburban streets - wider verges and laminar traffic flow.
Sometimes you need to insist on your right to be in a space, sometimes you need to accept that speed and mass will win any fight you have with a motor vehicle.
But as for spitting - never done it, never received it. What do you big city people get up to?
