yep, i can agree with that, in law perhaps.
in the real world it seems that the cyclist is, in most cases, causing a problem in the traffic by not being able to maintain traffic speed.
i know cyclists will object to that statement, but allow me to continue,
i have, owned vehicles which would not be able to maintain highway speed. it was frightening to be puddling along at max revs in a 1950's vehicle and be caught up with, on a bend by a semi, and you have no way of accelerrating away, just for a bit, to allow him to slow down a bit until he could pass.
unfortunatly most cyclists i see here on the gold coast still think that they can puddle along on the road and when a car arrives from behind them they have right of way.
yes legally that is correct, and i respect cyclists, but if you are the cyclist on a, say, 60 km road and a car rounds a bend and finds you on the road at 15 kms there is a problem for you and the car, [think of the problem when on a 100km road and a 15km cyclist]
if you manage to avoid each other, well and good.
but if the car hits you, usually the car wins, and going to court after the accident only settles money - not broken bones or permanant injury.
there is an assumption that riding in pairs will save you from cars hitting you, ok that does stop cars from side swiping cyclists, and converts the sideswipe into a direct hit of the outside cyclist.
but it takes all of us to realise where there is a danger area and ride/drive accordingly
i look out for cyclists, and respect their space, but i do not appreciate that some do not accept that i am also a user of the same road.

As a past and future bicycle commuter, I think there are polite ways of riding in mixed vehicular company, just as there are polite ways of driving a Series Landy

Most roads have enough room for the cars to pass provided the cyclist keeps left. Some cars don't leave enough room, some leave too much.

As for 100km/hr versus 15 - highways and freeways are safer for cyclists than suburban streets - wider verges and laminar traffic flow.

Sometimes you need to insist on your right to be in a space, sometimes you need to accept that speed and mass will win any fight you have with a motor vehicle.

But as for spitting - never done it, never received it. What do you big city people get up to?

I drive a truck ( and sometimes ride a bike) & its extemely frustrating & dangerous trying 2 overtake a cyclist on Nepean Hwy in peak traffic. I have 2 edge a smidge over into the next lane 2 get around cyclists making it hairy 4 everyone inclose proximity. And would`nt u know it, there`s a designated bike path that runs parralell(spelling) 2 the H`way.

yep nepean hwy is busy and to have a cyclist in the way of a semi is difficult.
i used to ride a motor bike on nepean highway and was always scared of semi's not seeing me.
when i was a kid running up the highway in the truck with dad we used to have cyclists tail us, you could see their shadow on the road and cuttings, some of them were able to keep up at incredible speeds down hill and they would hang onto the trailer for a lift up the hills.

As far as law goes in Qld cyclists have exactly the same rights as a vehicle as to lane/road usage. In most States it is illegal for a bike to ride on the footpath. Riding in gutters isn't on because of all the crap that accumulates there ie. broken glass. It sucks to be caught behind someone slow sometimes but hey thats life. Those cyclists usually own vehicles as well and do pay rego etc. Next time one is ****ing you off think of them as a relative of yours and treat them accordingly. I'm sure any riders and motorcyclists will agree its pretty vulnerable out there.

I have no objection to sharing the road with cyclists but I do wish they would ride in single file not two abreast. I know they are legally entitled to do so but it would be so much better for their image as mobile road blocks if one could pass without moving into another lane or the wrong side of the road. On Sunday mornings they seem to assemble in large flocks and take over great sections of main roads. This is not popular with other road users.

I ride a bike, drive a slow Defender, wife owns a Mazda 6 and I was a highway B-Double driver ranging from Brisbane to Melbourne for 10yrs and have seen alot on the road. In my experience it doesn't matter if I was on my push bike or in one of my other three vehicle's (which the rego total was in the thousands so is irrelevant at the end of the day) I was still spat on or cigarette but flicked at me, tail gated when i was driving the speed limit or cut off with no stopping distance to pull up a 70 tonne vehicle before killing the twit in their car who wanted to be in front of the truck.

Someone is always going to believe that THEY and THEY ALONE own the road and the other vehicle is going to slow them down enough to make them risk killing themself or others on the road.
I have witnessed death on the road to someone very close to me and can remember numerous times recently where people died for no good reason but for someone being in too much of a hurry and causing fatality.

It's just a push bike or another car or a truck. You will get to your destination it just means that your not leading the traffic. You will always have someone in front of you so just let it go and think of something more relaxing to calm your nerves.

Most people are calm drivers, its only the minority who cause the carnage.
