if i am correct 2" body and 2" springs will give the same final height as 4" spring lift as you are not actually raising the diff height at any stage can only do that with tires somebody correct me if i am wrong
worraps
Over the last several weeks that I have been a member of the excellent LR forum I've asked every suspension question that has dawned on me accept this
As a matter of speaking if one was to want a 4-inch lift and only curious on this one, what performs better a 4-inch spring or 2 inch spring and a 2-inch body lift
I would imagine a 4-inch spring as it increase ground clearance am I correct
But the 2-inch body lift will give you better on road driving as the center of gravity of the car wont change that all that much
Im I on the right track![]()

spring and body lifts give you wheel travel or articulation, bigger tyres give you under chasiss clearance.
The Ugly Duckling-
03 Defender Xtreme, now reduced by 30%.
a master of invisibleness.
Spring and body lifts won't change wheel travel or articulation without other mods. For example, shock length, bump stops, shock mounting points, etc.
Body lifts won't change your under chassis clearance, spring lifts will.
Larger tyres will give more under diff clearance and more under chassis clearance.
Tyres for Diff clearance
Springs for Chassis Clearance and some people say more articulation though the axels will only articulate as far as the rest of the suspention will let it and especially if you are running sway bars will not articulate any more than standard springs will allow.
Body Lift for more room under guards, more distance under sills and the ability to fit larger tanks and the like.
Tyres are the only thing other than going for reduction cases or the like that will give you extra dif clearance but they also give body clearance of the same amount.
With larger tyres on a Disco for example you will need to trim or flare guards but with a body lift most of the time that would be less than without.
Centre of gravity wouldnt be that much different betwwen a 4" spring lift to a 2"x2" lift as your over all height is the same and the extra spring length would give you a lot more sway and I doubt you could use standard sway bars (may be able to fit after market though) on a lift that high so you would be increasing the lean with the susp lift more making it more inclined to rolling as it is shifting the COG more than if you were running shorter springs and sway bars.
To improve articulation you would have to either, disconnect swaybars (if fitted), lessen the length of the bump stops, extend the length of trailing/contol arms, drive shafts etc etc.
This is why the comp guys I have met generally dont have huge lifts, they generally cut the crap out of their guards for better wheel clearence and only run 2 or 3" lifts but there are exceptions from car to car of course as every one is trying different ideas to get the edge over their competitor.
Hope this helps if Im wrong point it out.
I’m trying to learn all there is know about suspension and I understand the sway bar effect hence 4x4 like the Patrols and the like have sway bar disconnects how does one get as much flex as they can with ACE or is that the beauty of ACE that you don’t need disconnects on it
Forgive me but what does ACE stand for?
Also anyone have any pics of sway bar disconnects on any vehicle and where does it release from, the chassis mount (I would've thought) or the axles? I'd be keen to have a look to see how they work,
cheers,
chosen
If you have a D2 you wont be able to do a body lift. ADRs dont allow body lift on airbag equiped vehicle unless your prepared to crash test it... I would just stick with a 2 inch...is most of the time enough.
Chosen - ACE is Active Cornering Enhancement. Its a system that using hydraulics to level the car around corners. If you have ace you dont need swaybar disconnects as the system will slacken when in low. Check out the pics of my disconnects - http://www.gallery.d2au.com/main.php?g2_itemId=17266
