    Husqvarna 3120XP

    Hi Guys
I know a few of you work with chainsaws.
Im looking at getting a Husky 3120XP later in the year.BIG SAW 118cc will run a 72" bar!!!!!
Overkill YEP but it will pay for itself pretty quickly, will keep the Dolmar with the 21" bar for the little jobs.
If anybody has used one,how good are they???
If anybody hears of a good used one THAT HAS BEEN LOOKED AFTER,let me know.

Well I've used a 125cc McCulloch, when I was younger & fitter. They have made big weight and performance improvements in the small - mid saws but I reckon in that (120-5cc) size they were pretty well perfected in the 80's.
I gotta say that this is one product catagory that bigger is not always better. Most hardwood pro saw users go for a Husky 395 or Stihl 660 - both around 95cc and they are a mean machine. If they are cutting down 4ft dia tree's they usually use a 28" bar. I have a Husky 394 with a 42" bar and a 365 with 20,& 24" bars. The bigger saws do use more juice.
I can interchange them but really they both like to "work" ie have the motor loaded down a little, so I really only use the 394 for cutting up 4' to 6 ' (or bigger) dia red gum trunks or stumps that everyone else can't cut up.
Unless you are cutting up huge tree's all day long and are fit as a mallee bull, I would stick to around a 395 .

    Thanks Deejay
Where I cut wood there are heaps of docked logs 3 to 4 feet long and 3 to 6 foot dia, much too big for anybody to bother cutting, for 3 cuts you get 4 rings. Can just get a 3 foot with the Dolmar, cuts it easy but you need to lean way over the log and cut back into it,not the safest practice.
Will look at the 394,a mate has a 385,nice saw, wants $1500 for it.Done little work as he also runs a 365 but its not much cheaper than new!!!!
Goin to look at a few in Perth 2morrow.

hi andy back in the days when i was in the airforce (uk) i did a forestry commision chainsaw course and everyone on there used husky's, subsequently our section bought 20 and as piddler says they never miss a beat.
if ever i feel the need to buy one for myself then a husky it will definately be.

The guy who ran my chainsaw course swears by Huskys.
He had tried Stihl and come back to Husky. (20 years experience)
He said the vibration dampening in the husky is a better design because it uses springs rather than rubbers. There were other things he said he found better but I can't remember.
I'm no expert, just passing on this from someone who purports to be.

    72" bar - thats like 6 feet !!

6' bar is great if your milling but hopless for cutting rounds.

You will find that you will work twice as hard trying to control the thing and spend more time tightening the chain, breaking chains, sharpening chains and bending bars.

4' bar is more workable and with a reasonably powerful engine, it would be a fair bit easier on you and you will be able to cut a fair bit more in not much more time.

As Ive said before, the Huskys are good definatly but they are not an easy saw to work on and parts are very pricey, Stihl vs husky isnt an argument, more arborists, farmers and comercial operator such as shires and golf clubs buy stihl, not because the Huskys are bad or unreliable or anything like that but more because of parts backup and servicability.

E.g. Husky 55cc (what ever model that is) piston and ring kit, $203 and with an alloy bore, may need the bore as well, 1 1/2 hrs labour to pull apart and t broken springs later, the bill is closer to $350 with a bore and gaskets 2 springs and bits and pieces had to wait 4 days for delivery.

Stihl MS310, Piston and ring kit+aircleaner (reason it needed re ringing) $110, chrome bore so bit of wet and dry to clean up the bore a bit, 15 mins to pull apart, parts were on the shelf at my local mower shop and I had it back up and going in the afternoon.

This all may not mean much to you blokes but to a commercial operator, down time is lost money.

By the way, for what it cost to fix the Husky, I could buy 1/2 of a new stihl of the same size.

These prices are from mid last year and were sorced from dealers of the specific product at trade discount rate and Im in the Cranbourne area in Vic so your local prices most likely will be different.

If I were you mate, I would try it before you fork out your hard earned on something that you may find extremely hard to use.
