    Question how to spend $5000

I have an 1981 2 door RR. Very straight and goes well, so far, except for fuel consumption. 17L/100K highway.

I also have a V6 Saab for commuting. This also goes well but costs a bloody fortune when it doesn't. 7L/100K highway.

    Two cars seems silly!

Q: When (not if) I sell the Saab should I spend the money doing a real good fix up on the RR with maybe LPG, new paint job etc

    OR

should I sell both and get a 2nd hand Disco. (what model and what possible problems?)

Main use will be commuting and occasional and not extreme 4WD.

Sorry to open such a can of worms.

    Jack

If the 81 Rangie is as you say, then there would be no great advantage - except ABS & Airbag(s) going to a Disco.
There is a very honest write up in the latest 4WD Monthly on s/h disco's btw.
The other problem is the wait on getting the conversion to LPG done

    Yep, Get a Defender!!!

    I didn't (I got a 96 Disco) and whenever I see a Defender I want one!!!

Also, I should point out the better approach angle in the Range Rover compared to the Discovery.

Take your time making the decision,

fix the v8, make it LPG and then you can still get around with your head held high still feeling like you havnt sold your manhoodand if you put some dollars to the exhaust system it will sound fantastic.

Biggest mistake I made was going to a V6, its faster and more economical and an all round better vehicle than the V8 but it just doesnt have the spirit

    Yep, he sure did ;-)

However, if that is true the answer would have to be... Sell it, buy something like a Toyota, it is reliable, wont require constant love, attention and especially time!!! It will be comfortable and will be a LOT cheaper to run if you get the right one (maybe not against a TDi in Litres/100kms).

Sorry all, I do love my Disco but it is what I have discovered to be a typical Land Rover!!!
