In a blink of the eye

On Saturday arvo after a 10 hour stint with work I received a call from my wife that an older man had smashed in to the rear of her car (2002 Subaru Forester) while it was parked out the front of our house. The fella said he may have fallen a sleep but he can't remember anything before he crashed. A witness who saw the who thing thought he was turning into the street but a little to early then clipped the side of my wifes car pushing it almost 10 mtrs up on to the side walk then in to the small tree. He is ok dazed and confused to say the least but his dog that was ridding on the passenger seat and now has a broken spine and the doctors have given it a 70% chance of recovering.
I arrived home just in time to have a quick look at my wifes car and it doesn't look good to say the least. A hit at 60 Kmh can't be good for a little jap car in any way! His car is scrap! If i finish early tomorrow i will go have a better look and see how bad the damage is. My wife took a few pics with her phone camera.

(Blanky was for the poor little dog.)

A lot of people overestimate crash speed, but I concurr... that was a good one. It pretty well mirrors the ANCAP offset crash test. I'm suprised the guy has spinal damage. But then airbags probably kept him alive whereas 20 years ago his brain would have been killed by the stop.

If you love your dog, go to the vet and buy a proper seatbelt harness for it, there are types for dogs that sit in seats and types for the loadspace. For gods sake my mum puts a seatbelt around her VAX when its in the car! So why not restrain your dog?

A lot cheaper than vet bills from a loose animal being flung in a crash.

Actually Joel you have pointed out that your Mum is very sensible and does something most people don't do...

    What is it?
Restrain anything that may move in the car, in particular objects being transported. Those of us unlucky to have been in a major accident will attest to how easily even something as innocuous as a wallet or iPod can become a nasty projectile.

So whilst your belting the kids in next time and putting on your belt and strpping the dog in look around at what else might hurt everyone in an accident.

Actually I think my mum just loves her VAX... well it vacuums, shampoos carpets, washes hard floors, cleans up spills and unblocks sinks... most women would kill to marry that

I'm not sure Derek if you had anything to do with Toranas back in the day but I recall some I've seen having a sliding metal tray built in under the seat. When my grandpa bought one first thing he did was bin that metal tray. Some months later there was an incidence where a Torana passenger had her ankles lacerated by the tray
