spares/tools etc for a loooong trip

    Hi all,

Well in three weeks the misses and I will hit the road for our 3-4 month QLD to Perth top end road trip. The Defender is all serviced and running smooth. We are planning to go via Cape York, gulf country, gove and coburg peninsulars, gibb river and any 4WD tracks in between. The trusty TD5 defender has 120,000kms on the clock and hasnt let me down once - not even a flat tyre (touch wood).

I was wondering, besides he standard tools and recovery gear, what extra bits and pieces one might take on such an adventure.

Any tips or info would be of great help. I'm debating whether I will need things like spare filters, belts, hoses, or any special recovery gear or tools.

    thanks again

    Jimmy

There have been quite a few threads on this subject - maybe do a search.

Belts, hoses yes, plus a set of spanners to fit your Landy.
    Manual like Haynes.
Vice Grips I find are useful.
Gaffer tape, silicone sealant, araldite, thin galvanised wire.
Selection of fuses, common nuts bolts.
Phone number of some of the mechanics on this site

Did a similar trip a few years back in my County...

With lots of corrugated roads I'd take replacement schockie rubbers, pitman arm ball joint and tie rod ends.

If you have a snorkel, I'd also recommend a foam pre-filter sock to cut the dust to your paper air filter.

    Enjoy!

Jimmy, where is Goldy? Do you mean that overpopulated stretch of beach at the southern end of Qld?

If so, lots of people seem to get spares kits from MR automotive in Redcliffe - they chose the bits, you carry them but you only pay for what you don't return. They've done plenty so the kits seem to cover what people actually need.

I would buy all new hoses and belts and take the old one's along for spares, if you have enough thread on your shocks lower bolts I would fit another nut as a locknut and definitely take a spare set of shock rubbers and washers, Regards Frank.

At 120,000kms and what sounds like in excess of a 10,000km trip You may experience a fuel pump failure. These Td5 pumps are renowned for failing at around the 120 to 150 thousand mark. Although probably not necessary to carry one as a drop in performance and an increase in fuel consumption will give you some warning and time to get to a major centre where you may have to wait a few days for delivery.
We are carrying two spares on our upcoming Madigan Line trip due to remoteness of area.

The other really important spares to carry are a set of wheel bearings and hub seals. Provided your wheels can still turn, you can get towed to the repair shop! If wheels don't turn you will be looking for a good hardwood tree trunk to make a 'skid' and then have a far more difficult tow on your hands.

Attached (if I can work out how) is our spares/equipment list for our Madigan trip. Obviously you don't need everything on the list but it may help to jog the old memory cells regarding something worthwhile carrying.

Have a great trip - there's some awsome country out there to explore.

I did parts of remote Australia in a ZC Fairlane, 25+ years ago,
its LSD was enough to get me thru...even the other Kulgera(south)/Marree/Oodnadatta track.

2 spare tyres, a petrol jerrycan, 40 litres of water, plugs, hoses, belts, brake fluid and pads, engine oil, dexron for the auto and the p/s...and a jackall jack and a compass (and a box of tools and bits and pieces)...

...and a long piece of timber, a section of an old painters plank, used once only to unbog...

the only serious call was for the fire extinguisher... and the first aid kit got some use...

one tyre let go in Benalla, about 400 miles from end of journey...
