    What to buy....Disco?

    Hi Ladies & Gents
Apologies for what'll probably be a long winded first post...but here goes:

I currently run an '88 grey-import Pajero TD that I bought 4 years ago with a gen 17,000ks on it. It's lifted, winch-bar, snorkel blah, blah, blah, and has been an absolute bl00dy gem over that last 100,000k's.

But (there's always a but), while it has good range and great low gearing off road, it's a nightmare on long stretches of tar getting to the "good bits" as the gearing sees it doing about 3200rpm @ 100kmh - right where it's pretty much running out of steam.

So I decided I'd go looking for a new toy, maybe a 100 series or a GU Patrol. Now I won't have an IFS Cruiser, but even then, they still seem to pop front diffs and CV's and they're big $$, the Patrol have a great drive train but I won't touch a 2nd hand 3.0 litre (boom), the 4.2's a too expensive, and even the (under rated) 2.8's are holding a better pice now (probably 'cos of the 3.0). Still looking for 2.8's though...

So, leafing through the paper I come across a very tidy looking '99 300 Tdi with bullbar, snorkel, cargo barrier and only 150,000 k's on it at a very reasonable price and I start thinking...

See, some time ago I had a '94 D1.5 V8 with Kings & Konis etc that I loved very much, except for its drinking habits. One of the things that used to really tick me off was that the rear seats didn't lock in the folded up position - did that ever get fixed?

But the killer is - it's an auto - and I drove one auto once, straight out of the yard and straight back in again. Right after I changed my pants - went to pull out into the traffic and and nothing really happened except for upsetting a guy in an XR6!

Are all the autos like this? If I go this way, I'll have a lot of cash left over for the winch, dual batts, STT's, roof rack and lockers...

    What do people think?
    Cheers
    Mike

I drive a TD5 auto Disco, and while it's no speed machine compared to the Falcons and Conformadors on take off it's no slouch either, the auto is a very good box.

You will love the fuel bill! 9 - 10litres per 100km in a TDI. My wife (Again! with the wife) had a Disco TDI when I met her and I hated driving it in the city. However once U got used to it it was a great vehicle. The turbo would lag and do nothing until it kicked in. Hers was a manual. The inlaws have a 98 TDI and they got the turbo tickled up a bit. the turbo kicks in much earlier than our one did which made it more drivable. The only difference was we would get consistently 9.3 litres per 100 and they would get 10 litres per hundred. Go and buy it! Best four wheel drive I have ever owned. However if you still want a pootrol pm me I have one for sale! 4.2 litre diesel ute. All proceeds go to a 130 Defender!

Being a former Patrol man I thought it was the 2.8 that you had to be careful of if im not mistaken, the two I drove was a 04 HSE diesel Auto and manual the auto was in creditably gutless and the manual was much better but I needed auto, I hate diesel and I hate the cost of petrol no win situation

Cheers for that - sorry, not a "ute-boy".

Yeah I get that consumption out of the Paj.

I guess a new "chip" would help overcome the natural sluggishness of the auto on take off??

    Cheers

Before 2002, ZD30's are a time-bomb - I might as well take 25 grand to the casino - might win, might lose...

The 2.8's go very well when chipped and don't have a rep for self-detonation, but people who tow stuff (i.e. not me) don't like the smaller gearbox.

No idea on the TDI's but the TD5's are rockets. Especially after the mod chip.
