Thread: Warraweena trip.

Hey guys – just returned from a fantastic trip to Warraweena (http://www.warraweena.com). Spent last week there, and for anyone who likes a bit of rock driving – I absolutely recommend it.

It is fairly basic as far as accommodation goes, but great camping, and if you like the odd hut to sleep in, they are all 15 per night per adult. There is no phone reception, no camp shop, and basic shower facilities, but as I took my 3 boys away – it was perfect J

The best bit though is the driving, and with over 250Ks of tracks, there is something for everyone. If anyone has done the Sky Treck, it seems like a drive along the highway in comparison to the tracks at Warraweena.

I did the Mt Gill track first, which offers some great technical challenges, and without careful positioning of the car, you may sustain some panel damage. Fantastic scenery, amazing history, and challenging driving. According to Stony, the manager, the Victorian Land Rover club helped to create this track.

I also did the Old Angepena Goldfield Track, which was much longer 7 hours (67Ks) trip, but was more rewarding from a history point of view, and equally as challenging. This trip takes you along the old Angepena coach road, countless steep creek crossings, dodging boulders and trees, and plenty of very rough washouts with three/two wheel action. There are a number of old huts that are a remarkable insight into the history of the place, with artefacts laying around, such as buttons, bottle, pans, horseshoes, and all manner of other bits and pieces that we respectfully left in place.

The track also passes a gold mine, that is left pretty much as is since it was abandoned, including hut and mining equipment, sluice etc. After an hour of looking for gold, we gave up, only to find my 4 year old with a lump of quartz in his hand with a gold vein in it. He thinks he is rich, but what a great story to tell for years to come for him…

The kids highlight was finding a cave with a mumified kangaroo in it. They thought I was mean not wanting to put it on the roof rack and take it home.

I fully recommend a trip here to anyone who likes the wilderness, nature, history, or just plain great camping!

Murray, Warraweena is the same now, i think Stoney waves the cost of the drives if there is a large group booking, but if your on your own or a small group it's $45 for each drive.

I was down at Warraweena 2 weeks ago with a very large group (ExplorOz National Gathering) and we got the group discount ($110 for 4 nights) the drives were free.

We did the Cockatoo/Dunbar, Old coach Rd, Old Warraweena Station and then to Mt Hack, and the Mt Gill drives over the 4 days there, it was very nice and the views were great.






We prefered Arkapena Station, the facilities were better and it was $15 per vehicle and $40 for the self drives.
