What gauges to get ??

Being old fashioned I go for mechanical. Far more direct reading, that is, it is faster to react to changes, although the newer electrical stuff is good.
And lets not forget the burned out vehicles, caused by a bare wire shorting out some where.

I know VDO from Marine experience. Good but pricey.
VDO OEM in the International Fire Tenders I drove. They were accurate.
VDO dash in the F100. Stupid intergrated 5 volt dumb, dumb, dumb idea.
Bad example, delete memory.
Would not ever consider "Stanley" or "ND" (Nippon Denso). Honda owned subsidiary junk. Rather buy from Autopro.

As with all things, price will tell you the quality. But I do like Smith's, British gauges for our British vehicles.

I want to put in some temp gauges (will fit volt/ boost later) where should I be taking the temp from? what parts/ gauges will I need.

What temp ?? oil ??

I thought oil and coolant. what gauges/ senders are people using?

whats the standard temp gauge read ??? i thought that was coolant ??

I didn't bother with coolant as the gauge in the dash reads that - I added a low coolant alarm instead so I'd know long before the dash gauge started reading air temp if I had a problem with missing coolant, which is the most likely risk to guard against IMHO!

I run Autometer, they seem reliable and good quality if you get the right model. I run block temp, voltage, soon to be oil pressure and boost pressure.

The land rover temp gauge only works with water, the block temp will tell me the temp of the actual engine.

As for elec/mech, mech is illegal in the cabin. Run electrical, cheaper, more reliable, simpler, just as fast. And if you ever destroy a sensor, just fit a new one.

I cant remeber where i read it, but your not allowed pressurized fluid lines to enter the cabin. This pretty much rules out water and oil directly, and dodgy (EDIT: unknowing) police may take it a whole lot further.

As far as i know this is why you see alot of 'old school street machines with the gauges on the bonnet.
