BREAKING: Chrysler announces lifetime powertrain warranty!

Posted Jul 26th 2007 11:38AM by Sam Abuelsamid
Filed under: Marketing/Advertising, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep

Chrysler today leapfrogged every other car maker by extending its powertrain warranty on every new car and truck it sells to the life of the vehicle. The warranty will apply to the entire powertrain including the engine, transmission/transaxle, drive shafts, and axles. The new warranty goes into effect today, July 26, 2007 and applies to all new 2007s that are on the dealer lots as well as 2008 models.

The warranty covers all parts and labor as long as the owner brings the car in to a Chrysler dealer at least once every five years for a free powertrain inspection. Apparently, the only fly in the ointment is that the new warranty applies to the original owner and is not transferable. If the car is sold within the first three years, the warranty reverts to the previous 3 year/36,000 mile coverage for subsequent owners. The press release is after the jump.

Only 2 extra parts required to the fine print - original owner, 5 yearly inspection by Chrysler (gets you back to the dealer every 5 years!). In short - most cars are sold before 3 years are up (new car buyers drive new cars). For the rest - preventative maintenance will mean that bearings etc will be covered. There will be the standard clauses about logbook servicing.

And they will able to publicise "10 year old car, still under warranty" - worth every cent of the $20 per vehicle it will cost them!

Still, makes the new Jeep Wrangler with all the goodies look like extra-good value. Might need to change my brand loyalties

If a major component failure occurs, will they claim the lifetime of the vehicle has been exceeded...?

Hmmm. I can hear it now ...

"Sir, the lifetime of your car has been exceeded. Your car is now officially dead."

Isn't the lifetime of a Chrysler about 12 months?

If Ford continue owning Land Rover and have a chance to do what they did to '70's and '80's Fords, they will rust out long before the power train dies .
