I think this should be in bold text at the top of the forum, couldn't agree more. The P38 is a fantabulous car, I love mine to bits, I also hate it just as much. I feel they are more of an enthusiasts car, for people who want to get stuck in and do their own work. Otherwise budget in an extra 2-3 grand or so a year in running repairs. You never know you might get a good one.
For pure reliabilty and cost to maintain a disco is far more economical, just not as comfy, in my view. I had a new 2004 td5 disco for 3 weeks and then swapped for the P38. Looking back, should have kept the disco.
