Looking at buying Range Rover or Disco

I think this should be in bold text at the top of the forum, couldn't agree more. The P38 is a fantabulous car, I love mine to bits, I also hate it just as much. I feel they are more of an enthusiasts car, for people who want to get stuck in and do their own work. Otherwise budget in an extra 2-3 grand or so a year in running repairs. You never know you might get a good one.

For pure reliabilty and cost to maintain a disco is far more economical, just not as comfy, in my view. I had a new 2004 td5 disco for 3 weeks and then swapped for the P38. Looking back, should have kept the disco.

So, I gather I should be looking at a disco. Diesel or V8?

I notice the V8 are well priced, though are these just more trouble, like the rangie?

The V8's are renown for their longevity and lack of troubles,,
both things modern LR diesels are a bit short on,,

yes they cost more to run,, but fuels cheap compared to diesel heads.

depends what you want the car for and what you wish to do with it.

I went from an 88 Range Rover to a 2004 Disco to a 1995 Range Rover P38.

I am not a small guy, and I found the B pillar a bit to far forward for my liking in the disco from getting in and out point of view in relation to the position of the drivers seat, and just not quite as much hip room inside.

I also quickly missed my dual tailgate at the back, and promptly opened the sideways disco tailgate into a few other cars.

In terms of economy, if you were looking seriously at a P38 RangeRover then theres no issue with fuel consumption on a V8 disco as it will be the same or slightly lower. Again depending on what you want to do with the car, if boot space is not a big issue for you, you can cheaply and easily say stick a big LPG tank in the back and get your $2000 back from the gov and get a cheap LPG conversion done for a grand which will pay itself of quickfast. Or go the tanks under the car, but then you loose a fair bit of long range driving capability.

There's lots of little things in a car some people pay attention to and others dont. I wasn't keen on the dash in the disco, I just didn't like it. I didn't like where the spare wheel was. I wasn't keen on some of the interior trim finishes, but hey its all personal taste and I know a few people who have gotten into my P38 Range Rover and thought it was garish or ugly inside.

What do you plan on using the car for and what accessories do you want to add? Is it a rtunabout town or a long distance tourer?

Basically the vehicle I decide on will mainly be used as a town vehicle, with some limited touring/camping...

What are the 01 4.0L disco's like? Is $22000(Dealer Vehicle) too much for one with 64000km's? It looks and drives like it is brand new!

Does anyone have any idea of the value? I have looked on the net and the price seems reasonable.

An '01 for $22,000 is high. It is, despite the low kms, a six (and soon to be seven) year old Disco.
The dealer would have got it for a max of about $14,000... or less.....;););)

Ask a dealer (you don't know) for a trade in price on what you've described.

As in: "I'm interested in trading my (insert description here) on your new ('07 model) Falcon or Commodore or Magna 380...."

Give them a full run down of the 'trade-in' and see what happens, then report back!

Then you'll know what its $$$ value is...

Yeah these are the prices I found earlier.

It's just that most 00's-01's with more k's seem to be advertised at 20K

I'm still unsure what to buy...

64 makes it is a low yearly average,,

I was quite happy to pay extra to get a low kay example.

I betcha it still has the orig tyres on it

No need to rush and get the first thing that looks like a good deal (although I'd have to say $22K is not what I would call a good deal!).

For what you are looking at there are a large number of vehicles to choose from. Keep looking and take your time and something will come up.

If you were after a defender, well that would be a bit different....
