Looking at buying Range Rover or Disco

I am after some advice and information.

I am looking at buying a Range Rover or disco, around the 15K mark.

Currently I am looking at a range rover; 1996 123000K's, one owner around $16990. Is this good buying?

What would be best, a tdi disco or range rover?

I will be doing 80% town driving and the rest will be easy off-road stuff.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

The first this is, that is very low k's in the Rangie. It is possible it has had the speedo changed at some point. But once they get to that age then it does not really matter as you end up replacing everything anyway.

If you want a diesel for the sort of money you are talking, then I would have a look at some of the early model D2 TD5's. You will have a lot more power and a much nicer car inside. There are quite a few 00 and 01 TD5's which are advertised for $16-20k but I reckon you would get most of them for $15k.

On the P38A Rangie, the no. km is held in both the speedo and the BeCM.

If you change either and they don't match in stored readings, then the car takes the highest reading as the default mileage.

Resetting the odometer on a P38A isn't as simple as changing a speedo.

Having said that and being an owner of a P38A, I'd recommend the Tdi Disco.

Thanks to everyone for the information.

The rangie is at a dealership, I believe the km's are correct, the books are up-to-date and the one owner has just bought an 07's model.

I really like the luxury that the range rover offers, and the 4.6 V8 sounds great too, albeit exprensive on fuel. Though I would be disappointed if I had to put a lot of money into it with these low k's

I have also been looking at a disco; S 1997 155000k's $12990 would this be okay, or should I be chasing a model with less k's and around '00?

    Thanks again.

    A confused buyer.

You'd be surprised how good they are.

    On a trip, e.g. freeway, I get 13 litres/100km. Around town, 18 litres/100 and I'm no lightfoot.

Do be aware, though, that early 4.6 engines can suffer from a slipped liner which is expensive to repair. The liners weren't pushed in fart enough in manufacture (only a poopteenth but it was enough).

If the engine overheats the liner will move and let coolant into the cylinder. I'd definitely budget on a new radiator or a radiator rod-out. These engines run a hotter thermostat than previous models to keep emissions low.

You cannot afford to let them overheat. If they get hot, STOP!

    Ask me how I know.

Rons advice is probably news to us all
The P38 is an amazing car,,

and, as time goes by, not as scary to own,,

the prepurchase INSPECTION must be carried out by a Landrover specialist.

check with the yard to see WHAT the warranty covers,, ask about individual items,, like airbags or flexplates,

imagine owning a hundred thousand dollar car,,,,

The range rover I am interested in is in Melbourne.
Can anyone recommend a landrover specialist that could do the inspection for me? If I decide to go for the range rover over a disco.

    Thanks
    Andrew
