never lived in Benalla but had friends from University there

When the town is too small to support a KFC and your got to drive to Wangarratta for it 30 mins up road is the town too small for you.

If your into gliding great place to live

Otherwise another regional town in the country with a bypass

My sister in law lives there, but I really can't say anything about what it is like to live in. They find it has a good community spirit - as an example from when I was there last week; my brother in law was down the street getting a paper and was talking to some strangers about his wife's near blindness as the couple he was talking to had the same problem. He invited them to come round and see the computer equipment she uses. They arrived before he got back, while I was there - and came straight to the back door. This was not thought to be unusual. Maybe that example shows it is a country town!

after 10 yrs interstate I've come back to the north east. I havent lived in benalla but people I know who do seem to like the feel of the place. It depends on what you are into and what is important to you....from a 4wd, hiking, camping, fishing perspective, its brilliant as so close to the vic alps. If you are into night clubs and reastaraunts, youll have to travel. 2hrs to Melbourne is also pretty handy.

Let me say I do not live in Benalla - I live an hour up the Freeway. I did work there one or two days a week for about 11 months. During that time, working in a bank, I became friendly with some of the locals. Friendly, easy going people.

It is a typical country town. A quiet town. Most youngsters move on to the city, it has the normal social classes - unemployed, battlers, workers etc.

The town has re-invented itself after the Hume Freeway bypassed it. It would be fair to say there is a a growing civic pride amongst the residents.

If you want a bustling and exciting nightlife this town is not the place. Though I doubt the residents would describe the town as sleepy. If you are community minded and like to become involved, you would not be bored.

Benalla's location is what may attract you.

A slick couple of hours straight into Melbourne. Less than an hour (I think) to Shepparton and a little more night life. Fishing - the Goulbourn River, Murray River is not that far, Hume Weir an hour's drive, Lake Eildon is in your backyard (well it's a big backyard) Snow fields - easy as. Four-wheel driving - where do I start - there is a bloke on this forum - Joel - who probably knows the Strathbogie Ranges etc better than the back of his hand. All good stuff.

I wouldn't object to living there - but then again I find Albury too big, too busy and growing too fast.

It has a great gliding club too. When I was living in Melbourne in 92 I used to go there often.

I'm a country boy and i grew up in Cardross (mildura) most small towns are good as long as they have a bigger one close by. Benalla does... and being on the Hume its nver got the problem of "Next week mate"

Great place, great people but when I lived in that area they had no work, the same as Merrijig and Mansfield.

From all reports from freinds that live up that way and my old man who lives in Wangaratta it has plenty going for it these days as far as work goes and is plenty big enough to support it self.

It has been known in the past as the Hour town, 1 hour from everything you need as in Shep, Yarrawonga, Mansfield and Wang are all with in an hour away and about 2 hours will give you Mt Buller, Bright, Albury and Melbourne.

If my job was up there then I would be for sure as Mrs Mc likes it up there as well and half my family is still up that way.

I doubt you would be dissapointed if you have work lined up up there already and you dont need more than a local pub for your night life but there is a kinda night club there near the airport (if it's still there) that used to do live bands once or twice a month on a Friday night and we would all go over for the night and go to Euroa the other couple of Friday nights.

It is in Victoria, has Carlton pretendbeer, kick and giggle football, Victorian weather, and is full of Victorians.
