    I made 53 cents!

Yesterday I received a bill from the ATO demanding that I pay them $0.31 as a result of interest earned on a bank deposit. Yep, it came in an official envelope, full letterhead and invoice, with a 50c stamp franked on it to collect 31 cents from me. Good old HSBC paid it on my behalf and sent my TFN to the ATO so as to prevent re occurrence...

Then I received a letter from Australia post:

    "Dear Mr Nicholson,

article xyz blah blah that you posted on the 15/8/07 had the incorrect value of postage attached. In good faith we delivered the article and request that you please remit payment of $0.16 at your nearest post office." Again, all in an official letter with 50c stamp.

Using bizarre logic I believe that I am $0.53 ahead of the game

Just be glad we live in a civilised democratic (pronounced bureaucratic) society.

In some other country you would have been tortured, denied food and water, hung, drawn, quartered, shot, etc. Then your family would have received an invoice for costs incurred. If they could not pay the cycle would go on until no people would be left. Then America would take over .

Thanks for the story. It made my day.

I used to love baiting the government agencies like that.

I would deliberately leave a few cents left to pay on bills.
Most of these letters are automatically computer generated.
    Ah, the joy.

I used to do that with bills that you would pay in full on their advice, then they would bill you for 20 or 30 cents. I would then pay 50c or a dollar. They would then have to send you a cheque for the difference. Still have a couple for 20 and 30 cents in a file. They can not get you off their books until you cash it either.
