Andrew try this it worked for me and my wife.
Start the day off at one top class hotel for breakfast
Hyatt or similar, but dont tell her just get her up and say we are going out..say by 8.00am. Organise a Limo to take you.
Then take her to a movie, but go "gold class" (thats what its called over here where u are served ,and layback with only a few others in the theartre) You have to book on over the internet and pick good seats spend up big ..wine.. nibblies etc no cheapscating , Make sure u pick a long movie so u can relax.
After the movie go shopping, maybe a few hrs, after shopping go home , but organise some flowers (big bunch) and some chololates to be waiting as she opens the door.
Spend some more quality time, by then the day will be almost over and she would have enjoyed it immensly......
Why because you organised it all by yourself, you will be in the good books for some time.
    It works wonders!
    Have fun

It's obvious, a cement mixer so she can concrete the garden, then you can both relax.......

I agree with BradTot - do/organise something rather than buy something.

Past things that have worked well:
    - Scuba diving course (bit expensive but brilliant)
    - Horse riding overnight trek (sore bums!)
    - Concert/live theatre stuff

I am going to try golf lessons for the next birthday and see how that goes.

    Good luck - it's a tough call.

nothing beats a weekend away where she can do nothing but relax and sit on the beach or under a tree out in the bush somewhere, plenty of retreats around go horse riding and stuff, lots of spas and wine, its hard buying for the one that has it all and wants nothing. A surprise always goes down well, goes down better when it involves getting away from it, dont forget the aromatic candles and flowers.

I'm probably not going to be much help.... but I just had my birthday and I was taken away for a weekend to Fergusson Winery in the Yarra Valley. They have accomodation there and they do this great dinner for two for $100 incl about 5 glasses of wine each...it was very nice.

My other half surprised me this year by buying me a cool cabinet from an antique shop. It was an old timber poisons cabinet from a chemist...now I have put CDs in it. I liked it as it was different. I also got a jigsaw to go with my router

Sorry I can't really help... I do like the idea of the horse riding though. Someone I know got his girlfriend to pack all sorts of things to go away (bathers, ski gear, all types of odd things to confuse her) and then took her horse riding and she loved it.

    Good luck.

First thing I must confess, It is a near impossible feat for me to pick a prezzie for anyone especially for MrsMc but I have found that vintage/antique clocks are a winner.

I hate spending money and I have got pieved in the passed when people have spent too much on me for a birthday prezzie so I wouldnt go over the top unless you have a stash that she doesnt know about.

I took my wife skydiving - that was fun.

If you're into coffee - a GOOD QUALITY (not Sunbeam or Breville) coffee machine coupled with a Barrista course just keeps on giving.

Art. But it helps if you are aware of something she has had her eye on.

Concert tickets - again you need to be aware of what she likes and a bit of luck if something is on around the right time.

Shopping spree - and you need to make an effort to properly pay attention to what she is buying (ie. be responsive when she asks your opinion). And don't, under any circumstances, comment on how much things cost (you can scan pricetags discreetly then use that info to guide your helpfull advice). Don't use the "husbands' chair" but walk around carrying the million things she plans to try on.
