    following on from NM's lizard topic....

    What the hell is this insect... nobody that i know, knows! by the way its about an inch and a half long or a little more!

    I think you'll find it is what is called a 'mole cricket'.

    looks bloody evil tho.. im assuming they are passive and not dangerous in any way then!?

    and with that info i can find out loads about them!

    it is a relatively new newcomer (hence none of the aussies i work with know it) and the one we have seen is classed as a very new species!

    In numbers they can do a lot of damage to lawns.

    Not bad bait for freshwater fishing.

    That is a mole cricket and I can atest to the fact that they can make mince meet of a lawn or playing filed if they get there in numbers.

    Not a s fearsome as the Kiwis most terrible creature - The Wetta. Looks like one of these on steroids.My Kiwi wife tells me they really bite.

    Not as hard as her mother though I bet

    Yep the mole cricket, quite harmless, put them in your hand and feel the power in their two front whatevers, they can really push your fingers apart!
    We used to call them sandgropers
