Fantastic trip by the sound of it.
Remind me again, what do you do for a crust?
Yep … sure was …..![]()
Ended up taking 8 weeks. Cairns via Daintree to Cooktown (o/night at Lion’s Den) then to Cape Melville (Bathurst Bay) via Starke, good run with one night on the track. Mud crab and fish at Bathurst Bay. A few days in Lakefield. Off to Coen for Job 1, up to Lockhart River for Job 2. Night at Chilli Beach and Portland Roads … excellent with only a gentle breeze!! Back along Frenchman’s to Batavia Downs … top run, but bent panhard rod crossing the Pascoe.
Across to Aurukun for Job 3 then o/night at False Pera Head (good spot). Up to Weipa for a week to do Job 4 and nearby Scherger for Job 5. Replaced fuel filter after dud batch of diesel (I suspect Rockhampton). Up to Pennefather then Mapoon for R&R … excellent.
Then up OTL to top incl Gunshot. Excellent … Gunshot and Nolan’s Brook claimed many vehicles, mainly due to stupidity and an over abundance of testosterone.
Bamaga for Job 6 then over to T.I and Horn for Jobs 7 & 8. R&R at Vyrilla then back down OTL … bypass Gunshot heading South as very difficult, but not impossible if you’re keen and have a winch.
Over to Pormpuraaw for Job 9 then loop down to Kowanyama for Job 10. Bit of a tough run + crossing the Mitchell.
Down to Karumba for R&R then across to Normanton for Job 11. On to Burketown for Job 12 (last). Down to Lawn Hill (amazing). Through McKinlay .. “Walkabout Hotel” … aka Crocodile Dundee location … Don’t bother … Give it a miss ...
Back through Cloncurry, Winton, Longreach, Barcaldine etc.
9880 km towing 1Tonne+ CT. Average consumption 13.5l/100. Most expensive fuel $2.10/l at Kowanyama. One puncture at Cape Melville, Goodyear Wrangler MTR … excellent run with no obvious chipping. Not a lot of water encountered, max crossing depth 1 metre…. (blind + common sense go a long way up there)
Great trip and covered a hell of a lot of country.
Cheers

And Ron ... I'm an Engineer.
ADF have bases at the various locations. I was required to check and comment upon the compliance of the various sites with regard to their classification in relation to fitness for purpose e.g. Say 1A for things like the u/g command centre at Scherger RAAF Base to say 4E for the kids playground equipment.
In other words .... if they need to crank up the base at a minutes notice, would it be up to scratch and capable.
In addition ... provide a report on minor non-important items requiring attention that they can include in their long term maintenance program.
Scherger was probably the most impressive ... Huge base with 22 Km perimeter fence and 3 Km runway. Quietly humming away on their own power supply, all run by 2 RAAF caretaker personel + maintenance staff. All buildings fully operational (about 200), even instant hot water units powered up.
Medium sized operational army bases at Weipa, Bamaga and T.I. with whistle stop Reserve bases at other locations.
All very interesting but I didn't get to see any real secret James Bond sorta stuff ...![]()
Edit ... Lotsa Landies though ...![]()

Tough job but someone needs to do it.
Can't promise, but I'll try. Kinda snowed under at the mo, and will be for a while.
Snippet ........... Bathurst Bay. Mud crab and a very nice unwooded Chards for lunch + numerous beers.
Head off up the beach for a spot of fishing .... more. Cross a dry tidal creek bed and think nothing of it
.
You know the rest ... tide comes in. Croc swamp to one side, sharks and crocs to the other. Here we are perched up on a wee little tad of beach grass above high tide eating peanuts and drinking Irish Whiskey till 1:30 AM.
Ever tried to sleep in a Defender![]()
Ahh Scherger, I was one of the RAAF Caretakers there for 4 yrs up until Last December. Now I'm back fixing bloody aircraft in Edinburgh.
Scherger was the best posting I have ever had,,,I am currently scamming how to get back there...Can but only try.....
