I don't think there's an issue aiming the RRS and D3 at the luxury market (Especially considering the sales figures) but I agree they still need a basic utility vehicle that continues to do what they're famous for. My mind isn't made up on the new Defender, as I haven't seen one yet, never mind driven one and seen how it copes with a few years of hard life.

I don't know any "basic" new four wheel drive vehicles on the market now that has a diesel engine *and* an automatic transmission.
Toyota Troopy - manual only
New Defender - manual only

Much as I love Defenders and while they are being built I don't have to think for one moment what my next car will be, notwithstanding all of that, I have to say my experience in a 78 series on rough tracks is exactly the opposite to yours and your wife's. They have it all over the Defender for comfort, not just ergonomic, but ride comfort.
This wasn't even off the bitumen and they were rough as guts by comparison. You could feel every surface imperfection. I have never been in one in the rough, but based on that limited bit of experience it escapes me how they could possibly have better ride confort. Even the seats were crook.
Somewhere on the web, there will be the original specs for the GP (Jeep) as required by the WWII US military. I seem to vaguely recall that the prototypes were about a half ton over the requirement...
but the spec was interesting, stuff like hinged swinging headlights to illuminate the engine bay etc... must've known way in advance it was going to break down
and full float axles etc.. but I'm sure the REMLR guys will come up with the real stuff...
