Its interesting, there are some communities that also do run limits, such as north of the Jardine River where you're allowed 1x case mid strength and 2 bottles or wine or something like that. Admittedly we thought that was nothing even remotely close to what we needed! :angel: I guess up until the government intervened each community developed restrictions that most suited them - whatever the criteria. I also recall being at Batton Camp a few weeks (months??) ago and they were just saying to be sensible with the booze. I guess all of that has now just been overruled.

Have to laugh, before going into an alcohol restricted zone on a previous trip we felt it was our duty to make sure that every trace of alcohol was removed from our vehicles. Well we had a good go and wasn't that night an absolute cracker! We ended up sitting in the river until about midday the following day trying to sober out and feeling slightly travel sick. :lol2: Sadly we were not successful and so did this.

lol EchiDna that might last a couple of days :) j/k..all in all its up to us as we only know ourselves,its just the old arguement the more poowerfull race takes control,cant control legeslation converts back to the old arguement. There's no moss coverd rocks in aus lol.

I read the document and it seems those quantities are totals so, on a trip with a few people, that's not much alcohol.

If you read the article, it doesn't say you can't have the alcohol. It states you can carry grog across aboriginal land, just not consume it on said land. This is as long as you are just passing through, which I would humbly suggest is what most people do.

More bloody ridiculous regulation of honest hard working citizens brought about by the irresponsible actions of a very small minority. Bring on the next Territory election when we get rid of the Labour government.

Doesn't build up much these days and hasn't for several years. The one on the road to Drimmie Head is still often impressive though.

Everyone in town is confused and annoyed by whats been handed down. Give you an example, we had a BBQ down the beach planned for next Friday, couple of drinks or a bottle of wine between 6 of us is not on, its illegal. This does absolutely nothing to curb other drinking in town, the legislation is aimed at areas like around Alice, Darwin and Katherine. Many communities in Arnhem Land were already dry and there are big moves afoot to implement tighter controls on the sale of alcohol without what amounts to prohibition.

Most people will do just that however there are a large number of recreational areas we all visit up here. Also if you open the bottle outside of the land and close it again with some remaining then it is in breach of the law.

The previous laws for taking alcohol of any quantity into a designated dry community were very strict and could lead to $10,000+ fines, loss of vehicle and all posessions.

Sorry, EchiDNA, they were right - it clearly says ANY alcohol carries a fine. But you are right too - it only applies to certain areas, being Aboriginal communities, settlements and camps.

It's a mystery to me how they can do this legally. I lived at one time in a community that had previously had a policy of "only a 6 pack a day as takeaways." This was deemed "discrimination" by a Government enquiry, because the white community ordered their grog at a more distant pub and had it transported in, so the limits really only applied to Aboriginals (despite the obvious possibility that they, too, could order their takeaways from another source).

At the other end, I'm aware that in a nearby community people would fly in cartons of beer taking up airline seats - the policy was one carton per seat and they paid adult fares. It makes for pretty expensive beer - but there was hefty markup on top of the staggering cost.

Having seen the cost of alcohol for some communities, I'd be prepared to avoid alcohol in that setting. But clearly no-one's going to be preventing bottles of wine travelling on the highway.
