    Sundown National Park and trailers

    Hi guys.

Anyone ever been to Sundown NP and driven to Burrows' Waterhole camping area?

Did you tow a camper or any sort of trailer?

The National Park site says this:
It is recommended that campers do not attempt to tow trailers and caravans into the 4WD access areas in the NE of the park (Burrows, Reedy and Red Rock), to minimise damage to park roads and private vehicles. Steep sections of the roads can be severely damaged by vehicles towing.

Our 4wd club has been to other places where it says trailers are not recommended and it has been fine. Are they catering to the lowest common denominator or should we just pack a tent?

    Thanks.

Burrows Waterhole is a top spot to "get away from it all".
    .............Except school holidays........Don't bother.

The track into Burrows gets worse every year, as it is not maintained. It alternates from rough to rougher.
However. That keeps the "tourists" and most of the "hoons" out"......I have seen the damage "so called" 4wd clubs can do to this park.

With or without a trailer, slow, slow, and slower is the way to go.
Take extra care with your tyres and appropriate pressures, or you can have multiple punctures.....and sidewall damage.

If towing a trailer, (the lighter the better) be prepared for a two hour trip once leaving the bitumen....and two hours of "are we there yet?".
There are numerous narrow sections with blind turns and steep hills.....can get "interesting" if one encounters an oncoming vehicle.

Plan for extra days stay. If it rains, getting the trailer out could develop into a problem until the rain runoff subsides (plus getting traction up the steep washed out hills). There are numerous places that become impassible due to water depth......but only for a day usually.
I have been caught there a few times over the years for an extra day or two......without the burden of a trailer.

Dry or wet. Don't plan on towing past Burrows. By all means explore through to Rats Castle, without trailer, and with all your recovery gear on board....you may need it.

I have used my winch most in Sundown rescuing other peoples vehicles and trailers due to foolishness, rain, and breakages.

Don't let my warnings put you off.
Go in there with a "take it easy and slow" attitude.
Be as self sufficient as possible with recovery gear and ability to affect a few repairs if needed.
Extra food for a possible extended stay.
Take your own drinking water, as the water available is questionable quality.
The women will complain about the long drop stinky toilets at Burrows. But, they beat digging a hole in that hard rocky ground.
The goannas will steal your food if it is left unsecured.
Oh........and be careful of the snakes. They are out and about now. Burrows has some big browns.

Oh. Nearly forgot the important stuff.

When camped at Burrows waterhole, it is obligatory to pay your respects to Fred.

Fred Burrows died in the 1920s and his grave is near the top end of the camping area.
Walk to the upstream end of the river flat and cross over the river. About 50 meters up a slight rise near the ruins of a holding yard on a level section his grave can be found.

There is a story circulating that if you do not visit him, he may visit you during the night...........But I don't believe that stuff.

haven't been to the area myself but the warning seems more to be asking people to please do not tow trailers as it causes more damage to the tracks... not that you can't get them there.

    Thanks Dirtdodger.
Sounds like I should leave the trailer at home. It sounds like a tent would make for a more relaxing trip.

It is planned for later in the year but I don't remember the date. However as it is a club trip you would have to have joined and done our driver's awareness trip. So if you're interested....

I've been wanting to do it since I got my first 4wd and even had a trip that got cancelled at the last minute so I'm looking forward to it.

I understand that but once again they could be aiming that at the people who don't understand tyre pressures and think that speed and wheel spin is how you attack all obstacles etc.
