Thumbs up Any prospectors among us?

I was flicking through a 4wd mag and was reading an article on prospecting both gold and general fossicking with a detector, anyone know if there are spots close to Canberra that may be worth a fossick, old mines etc, and also ghost towns, has anyone seen or driven through these supposed ghost towns that dot the country, any worth a look? Am always plotting my big trip for when the kids are out the nest and the old series3 can earn her keep

not a prospector but there were mines at Araluen, Nerriga, near Murumbateman and up in the Snowies to name a few, all an easy day's drive from Canberra.
If you want a ghost town Yerranderie is worth a visit, between Oberon and Warragamba dam.

I have done a lot of prospecting in my time from panning, detecting to dredging.. I say don't start you spend a lot of time looking for very very little. But the fever burns and pushes you and there is no cure. You look and look but you don't find..Save your self the torment..

I dont hold any hopes of finding the nugget the size of a foot ball, just a bit of fun with the boys and a good day out in the bush,

I have often read of towns where the local industry had closed up leaving nothing for the local folk so they pulled stumps and headed into town and the old town just sits there decaying and abandoned, these are what I want to explore in my travels

I have no doubts there are local spots, have to get some maps and go ver them, old tuins are great places to ferret about with metal detectors, I have seen what some folk find on the beaches with them, lots of watches and rings

all the areas have been hit hard. its hard to find even a old coin.. You really need to know what you are doing and have the latest gear. this will set you back more cash that you will ever get back in gold. The best bet to have fun is get a small sluice and pump and look for flood gold in the sands of a small creek.. But beware the fever will get you and the fun side will disapear and make way for the full blown fever..

the only yellow fever that takes me over is an over indulgence in beer.
