What annoys me was that diesel used to be a lot cheaper then petrol as dieselwas used for lorries and vans but not commonly used in for private cars. Diesel then become more popular in cars so the rip off governmnt started to increase duty on diesel. Cost of diesel in UK is

    50p Fuel Tax

    33p Oil/Refinery/retail cost

17p VAT (Value Added Tax = GST in Oz?)

Now Fuel tax goes up 2p a litre BUT costs to consumer goes up 2.35p a litre as we pay tax on tax!

Since diesel is used to transport goods it means all goods go up in price..

Also makes it even more difficult for UK transport firms to compete with European firms as Diesel price in Europe is about 60-70pence.

Just be grateful that you dont have UK tax policies in Aus

    regards

Adelaide - $1.386 here at the moment (depending on what day it may fluctuate 8¢ or so). 6 months ago it was $1.219 at my local!!!

If it is any consolation... here in OZ I've heard stories of the quality not being as good as overseas :-/

Austrlaian diesel is not required to meet current EU standards, although some of it almost certainly does. On the other hand, most US diesel would not meet Australian standards - so I suppose it depends on what you call overseas!
