    Variations in TDI performance

Most of my trips for the past roughly 1,000 km have been around town commuting, stop start etc. This afternoon I pulled an 8x5 tandem, ATM 2000kg + 450kg Tare, loaded with firewood + cut redgum sleepers 150 odd km down the Hume, reached a max momentary EGT of 700 on one of the big hills (pushing it), with EGT's averaging 400 during the whole trip.

Just went for a drive and the Disco is a totally different thing to drive. Acceleration is very satisfying and it is pulling its own weight a lot easier with less throttle.

For me, even country runs do not produce the same effect, it seems that a Tdi needs to be put under a good load to "clear out the cobwebs"

So what specifically happens within the engine during heavily loaded runs that can be attributed to such an increase in performance?

(PS. Does anybody else notice this or am I totally deluded?)

nope, welcom to the Alabama rev tune...

basically you get everything flowing as hard and as fast as it can and the extra heat will help it free up any deposits on valves, injectors fuel lines etc etc etc..

when you come back down off the noise theres less crud in the places where there was crud to interfere with the works.

Bet if you check the oil immediately after you'll find a noticable increase in insump contamination untill the filter pics it all up...

If Im trying to do a cowboy tune on an engine as part of a service on the cheap I'll work its nipples off immediately before doing the service, and attempt to service the engine while it still roasting hot (cept the cooling system that gets serviced before it gets the cowboy treatment) as everything is freed up while the engine is hot making fine adjustments easier to do and the crap that comes out winds up in the old filter and in the old oils.

I too have noticed this, the highway runs are good but loading it up makes all the difference. It was also noticeable in our old Jackaroo (2.8TD) Diesel Patrol and my BJ40
