Dont do it Andy, stay away from the evil flip phone of little value and no coverage.
Some one must have a old cdma phone laying around, up here nex G only works in the town and a few spots out side the city limits. There are plenty of cdma phones still on the go, I got mine back when the flip phone falled to operate in the bush. Today the fed gov anounced that the cdma network life will be extended, maybe thats because next G is only where 95% of the population is (the east coast strip) and not regional australia.!!!!

When I'm here I want to be out there.
Next G seems to work better here than CDMA (I still have CDMA but most neighbours have Next G), and at five hours drive from the coast I am hardly on the east coast strip, although I guess I am from the Geraldton perspective.
While I agree completely about Telstra*, unfortunately the simple fact is that nobody else has anything like the coverage (although in some specific areas others have better coverage), so if you live or travel in rural Australia you have no choice.

* Latest Telstra effort - Son's phone was cut off yesterday. Turns out that the reason it was cut off was the bill was overdue, despite the fact that the due date on the account was 15th October. This was admitted to be an error but they demanded payment before reconnection although they waived the reconnection fee.

ran over my cdma phone, the big T would NOT reactivate an old cdma phone, only supply new next g.Where we were camping the g was useless but cdma still worked, but I was shown a computer screen to prove I was wrong.
Result.....cancelled account, phone in bin,and its great having no phone.
like trying to get a user name and password out of them for an adsl account before you receive your "magic" cd.
love the discussion you get to have with the droids... i know it isnt their fault, but that really doesnt make it any easier to bear week in week out.
usually goes....

why they promise a half hour switch over time on a fast churn amazes me, it takes them near on a week to send a cd, but they do it time after time.

Not sure where I rad it but I believe it was a post from a Telstra Tech in relation to next G/CDMA coverage. From memory it goes something like this (sure someone will correct any mistakes)
(Talking Network here) When changing to Next G the tower still supports the CDMA but the "bandwidth" or whatever it is.... Is split between the two networks based on the uptake of Next G in that service area. If the uptake has been slow then coverage/network will be biased towards CDMA until that changes (or CDMA network is shut down) So those with CDMA don't notice but those who are the "first" Next G subscribers curse it. As Next G uptake increases the CDMA is restricted opening up more "bandwidth" for Next G and then the CDMA users curse it.
The trick apparently is if you know a few who are thinking of switching then do it all together so their is a noticeable increase in the useage and the area will have the bias focused more on Next G
If a businees with several phones has changed it could effect the area based on this thus the reason some areas the Next G coverage is better (even though the business may not use the phones in that area)
