Telstra CDMA to Next G - free phones
Hi folks,
Have any Telstra CDMA customers received a call from Telstra offering free Next G phones?
I just did. They are going to send me out an LG TU550 free of charge with no changes to contracts etc. I am still on a $30 corporate plan (5 phones or more) attached to our family business.
Thought it was a little odd.
They said they would also give us Next G phones to replace our GSM phones on the same plan if we wanted to.

Not all that odd, CDMA is going to end - so you have to change - and telstra are just making it easy for you not to go to another provider - when the changes is nessesary
The thought is that with all the offers going on from others - you may be tempted to go elsewhere
Well that is my cut on it anyway

I agree that they are wanting us to stay so giving us the phones. However as a CDMA customer I am not used to being looked after. I feel that Telstra with regard to CDMA assume that you only use CDMA (or Next G) as you need the coverage. So since no one else offers the network then they have no reason to give you stuff to stay with them.
However when I was a GSM customer they used to do things such as give discounts on bills and free stuff to keep us with Telstra.

Very strange I would think..... Considering they have control of the network and you don't have a choice.
Or is there something in the wind........... Federal election and all

They have sent e a couple of texts
I've had mobile phones since 94 and I'm only on my third since then. I do tend to keep them.
I'll wait until January and look around then. There is nothing wrong with the phone I have now

Well I got my free NextG phone yesterday and had it connected this morning.
I must say I was pleasantly surprised that my promised LG TU550 turned out to be a Nokia 6120 classic
Couldn't have come at a better time since my Kyocera KX5 CDMA phone's buttons on the front panel only work intermittently.

it's a pity the Telstra refuse to wholesale (ATM) the Next G network to the smaller retailers that they currently wholesale the CDMA network to. Obviously trying to force customers such as myself back to their arms, whether we want to be with them or not.
Smacks of abuse of market power.
<edit> bottom line is they are getting my money anyway, just that ATM I feel a little better as I'm not paying them directly. According to my provider (Southern Cross Telco) they have something like 15,000 other country customers who feel the same way and really don't want to deal with Telstra, but need country coverage.

That's pretty good Reads. They advertise that they will cancel any phone contracts without penalty and write off any money owing on your CDMA phone (so they should since they are cancelling it). But to wipe an entire phone bill is pretty damn good
It's interesting that they are giving away free Nokias. They must be one of the most expensive NextG phones on the list. Your bill would justify such a phone mind you. However I am on a $30 business plan and rarely go over. Maybe they justified my phone on the total business bill?
