Back in 1993, when Paul keating called the election for mid March, the ALP was deeply worried. A loss was on the cards. Hewson/Liberal had the ALP on the ropes, despite his promise to introduce a 15% GST.

Every morning Graham Richardson was in our office, which was the 'war room'; it's where we planned how to make all the tv commercials for the campaign.

Each day Ritcho would come in, looking flustered and unhappy.

He'd start the day with "we're gonna lose". This went on for about two weeks.

With about a week to go before the vote, he arrived in the office; he was as happy as a pig in mud.

"we're gonna win! we're gonna win!" he exclaimed.

I asked him why.

He said: "The groupies are back!"
