usually (and this is totally military and not generally what
happens on civvie trips)
ignoring all the different circumstances of terrain (city, open country, Dense country, hills, dirt, mud, sand, tracks etc etc....) theres 2 speeds and 1 distance to worry about the first is the average convoy speed and that should be based on the cruise speed of the slowest vehicle (say 80kph for a sereis) and then a catchup/overtaking speed (call that 90) with a set distance (typically 100m for the highway 25m in the city unless your a truck then its 200 and 50)
It helps to think of a convoy as a spring that is pushed along from behind... the vehicle at the back needs to go as fast as it can to push the convoy along without closing up inside of the spacing distance as set for the circumstances ( you generally have 3 or 4 differnt spacings for different types of terrain and the coverall is "dust distance") if the vehicle behind you is not keeping up you must slow down to maintain the spacing from him. If he is pushing you along and you have extra space between you and the vehicle in front you can speed up to the "catchup speed" untill such time as you are at the correct distance from the vehicle in front...
IT takes a lot of time for a group of people to fall into "proper" convoy disipline and there will be a lot of undulations in speeds for up to an hour untill everyone gets sorted.

Mate just the speed limit, we don't get that specific bar a few from TL saying is current speed ok. We have done convoys from GC to Fraser with 10+ cars, V8's and Diesels, all got there safe and sound,

if the GCLRO convoy rules are followed then this question is superfluous.
if everyone keeps the vehicle behind in sight, then anyone in front of the slowest vehicle is pulled back to that vehicles speed, and the guys behind it are trapped anyway... it is self regulating by it's very nature.
if there had been a series 1 in the convoy on the weekend then we would have all been drawn back to the speed it was capable of doing, and i would have limited my speed up front accordingly anyway, as i would have asked the driver what speed they were happy to cruise it at, before setting off ..

Was not really a criticism, just a bit over the top for my liking. The more rules that you give people to remember the more they will forget. But hey whatever the convoy agrees on is fine as long as you get agreement.
I find if you keep it basic, every one stays happy, if you complicate it people get annoyed and go their own way. I believe each to their own.
The light issue is not a bad one, but not foolproof either, just because there is a set of lights behind you does not mean its the next car in your conoy.
I still think good electronic communication is more valuable, or just being aware who is in your group and where they are. The leader and tail end charlie have the most important rules.
Obviously a good day was had and congratulations and support do go to the organisers.

Stories I could tell about things I have seen in Military convoys could take days
If you have a huge amount of enthusiasts travelling to a said location
keep them down to 5 vehicle packets
Keep to a prearranged speed limit and fuel stops
and a vehicle distance of about 100m-150m
lead and rear vehicles to have radio comms..
simple rulez like that will win friends on the hwy's with other road users
opposed to having 20 landrovers taking up the hwy blocking road users from a speedy passage home and stressing everyone out.

Not all people are familiar with the disiplines required to hold a convoy. It is successfully practiced in the club runs I have attended with the LROC and to a certain extent the forum runs I have led in the past. Unfortunately all it takes is one to wreck the whole lot though.
