110 / Defender LPG Tank Placement

    Hi all,

I'm going for dual fuel for my V8 County, after finally getting a few minor bits and bobs sorted.

Obviously the cheapest option is a big tank in the back, but as I'll ocasionally need to carry 8 I do not want to go down this road.

It has been suggested I go for either 1 or 2 underbody 'fork lift' style 30 litre tanks.

Does anyone out there have any suggestions / experience / photos of underbody tanks on a 110?

Ideally i'd like more than 30l; two tanks and 60l apparently means mods to the underseat battery area to fit the second tank, so will no doubt cost more

I have one, possibly two, places that can do it, bit I'd like to get independent advice first.

    Thanks for all your help.

These forklift tanks should they not be 40/45 litres

And are they quoting you 30 litres useable , Because all Lpg tanks are minus 20% for expansion , that only makes it 24 litres per side all up 48 litres

So maybe the 30 litres is right for a 40 litre tank

Not sure on the sizes, I just posted what I was told on the phone yesterday - I'll have to check. Thanks for the pointer!

I cant help you with tank sizes but if you look at the API site you can download a PDF with all the tank sizes.
I went through this process with my Stage 1 2.5 years ago and got a lot of mixed responses from LPG people in Adelaide.
What I found was that Bowey Autogas in Salisbury (ring Don) had a positive attitude and in the 2.5 years since fitting I have never had an issue with the system apart from the failure of a small module.
Some of the other fitters almost refused to put LPG on the Rover V8 because of back firing issues. Mine hasnt backfired once.
I have no relations with Don apart from being a satisfied customer.

I got twin tanks under a 109 SIII Hard Top. But I'm not sure they'd fit under a S/Wagon. I get 70 usable litres from the 2 tanks (linked in common ie: single fill, no switching).

Another option would be to put twin scuba tanks where the rear tank is (from a RR or Disco) and then fit Petrol tanks to the sides.

    Hi mate
Read a newspaper article a few weeks ago, there is a company is aus building non round tanks, not the "scuba" tanks, but square etc. They even mentioned wedge shaped tanks to suit 4x4s.
Worth googling or something as a cylinder really chews space up big time.
Sorry I dont recal the company name, but well worth the search.

Using fork lift, removable type tanks for automotive use, no longer meets Australian/New Zealand Standards for new installations.

I have to agree with you the loss of space in the rear is a real problem as is the lack of endurance (distance traveled). I would be looking for between 80L to 100L LPG volume as a minimum. A scuba style (manifold) tank is only 59L LPG (84L water vol.) The recommendation for the RRc is 2 X H66 APA tanks longitudinally which only gives you 70L LPG Vol.

A friend an I were considering having specials made up for a S2a SW which is essentially the same dimensions in the rear of the chassis as the defender. The plan was for 2 tanks across the chassis the front one a larger diameter than the second, with a serious tank guard underneath. Even if it meant having to modify or replace the cross-member just in front of the rear on the series chassis.

APA will make up special to order tanks using any of their standard diameters. Using these we were able to plan combinations that would give combined LPG volumes of between 100L and 117L with the most viable combination being 1 X 375mm Dia. X 600mm and 1 X 310mm Dia. X 600mm resulting in l00.5L LPG

Go to the APA site and work out your alternatives.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

I am taking the LPG installation off my County soon,( see projects & tutorials) but will be keeping the tanks. I just got a new Landi converter and safety switch for $350.00 back in March. If your interested in having the lot ie cutoff valves mixer rings, hoses etc, PM me and we can work something out. You would need to make sure that your installer is happy to use secondhand parts first, although the converter is new and I doubt that mixer rings wear.
    Regards,
    David
