    new 4wd from........ korea

Just found out today that the new terracan, due in about 2009, will be slightly larger than the old, and come with a 3.0L turbo diesel V6 or a 4.6L petrol V8.......... Even though everyone here probably hates them i thought id pass this semi useless information on

No, not everyone, I have a CRDi Terracan as my work car.
Pulls like a train, good economy, seems well put together, comfortable on the road and it's free.
It's never going to match the Disco when it gets really serious (it has IFS), but is still very capable off the black top. A few mods (lifts and tyres) and they will get you very far, check out some of the cars here

Went to Lake Lyall with these guys on the weekend and have been out a few times with them also, not a bad car offroad really, the torque on demand system they have seems to work well.

    PMT is a showoff

I came out of Bunnings the other day, and found a Ssangyong Rexton parked next to the Defender. I had a quick look through the window, and it looked pretty decently made! Also the panel fit was a bit better than you often get from the Koreans.

Anybody had any experience with Rextons?

    Cheers,

    Lionel

Took one for a test drive before buying the Disco. The build quality is plasticky and it has weird additions for the *luxury* market like individual ash trays and lighters. I wasn't too impressed with the interior. The engine is a Merc common rail diesel. It has an infuriating flat spot before the turbo spins up that lasts a good couple of seconds.

For their price I think there are better buys available. So far as the Terracan is concerned, I have never driven one but I would say that any company with the engineering skill that Hyundai clearly have, vehicles they produce are likely to be well designed and engineered.

My understanding is that the Terracan is the recently superceded Pajero platform sold to Hyundai (so yes it would be a well sorted vehicle) - who have been selling badge-engineered Pajeros in numerous markets for a while under the very sad name of "Galloper"...I'll leave you with the thought that the alleged meaning of Pajero and Galloper may have something in common...

For less than $40k, the Terracan is quite reasonable.
As we all know, few will ever do any serious work...
Be interesting to see what the next incarnation is...

Hyundai's new i30 is a very interesting car, and cheap for what you get...

I wouldn't be surprised to see the i30 crdi
get into the final 3 for the Wheels COTY gong.

(No, I'm not a 'Hundi' advocate, but they are getting better at building cars)....

I work at a hyundai/subaru dealer as a mechanic. The i30's in the diesel form are great and the pull hard too. I guess i am a hyundai advocate. ive been working on them for 11 years and it is great to see them getting a lot of things right, compared to the old days. I reckon a V8 Terracan would be pretty horn with about 200kw
