In NSW (& probably Australia-wide) if a car is written off the compliance plate is removed, meaning that it can't be re-registered.

I believe thats only if its a statuatory write off, i had some woman run me off the rd while i was on my Suzuki and it was a financial write off, i bought it back for $450 spent $750 to repair and then sold it for $2750(originally $3950 new).

In Vic, cars can be written off as repairarable and can still be re -registered. They have to be virtually unrecognisable to be a total write off, and yes, then they can never be re registered.
